Saturday night, I made my way back to Whitefield to watch the Newark Catholic Green Wave battle the Northridge Vikings. The Vikings entered 3-4 overall, while the Green Wave came in with a record of 5-2.
Kyler Dales snared a pass from Malone Hutchison, picking up 18 yards with 10:47 remaining in the opening quarter. Then the Green Wave went to the ground gain, with Jaxon Holman picking up 13 yards. Holman used the work of his lineman to hit a hole hard, picking up 15 yards to the Vikings' five. The Vikings defense held the Green Wave on fourth and one from the one, as Holman tried but never came close to hitting pay dirt.
The Green Wave defense forced three-and-out, giving the Vikings offense just 8 yards. Hutchison found Dales for the touchdown, making this a 6-0 game. Hal Gillespie missed the P.A.T. to give us a 6-0 score with 4:40 remaining in the quarter. The drive totaled 24 yards and lasted for just one play.
The highlight of the 2nd Viking drive was a 12-yard completion from Bridon Angus to Gus Cermak with 3:18 left in the quarter.
Hutchison hit Dales with 10:30 left in the half for a gain of 13 yards. Hutchison then completed an 11-yard pass to Carter Chupka. Alex Nagel galloped to a gain of 28 yards, setting the offense up with a first and goal from the one. With 8:59 left, a direct snap to Holman, who waltzed into the end zone, made this a 12-0 game as the two-point conversion failed, with 8:59 left in the half.
The Newark Catholic defense, early and for most of the game, looked like the defense of years ago as they swarmed the ball like a hive of killer bees, not allowing the Vikings a chance to sail.
With 5:44 left in the half, Hutchison found Holman for a 50-yard gain to set up a first-and-goal from the ten. Holman took the ball the final 10 yards to make this a 19-0 game. Holman busted through three tackles before finding the end zone.
Jayce Golden picked up 8 yards for the Vikings with 3:59 left. Fifty-one seconds later, the Vikings converted a fourth-and-four when Angus threw the rock to Golden for a gain of seven. Angus threw a nice ball to a wide-open Timothy Goldsmith, who picked up 26 yards before being taken down at the Newark Catholic 2-yard line. Golden took the ball in from there to make this a 19-6 game, with 2:13 left in the half. Angus had his two-point conversion pass picked off by Nagle.
Nagle caught a pass from Hutchison, picking up 31 yards, with 1:57 left in the half. A 17-yard completion to Jace Johnson gave the Green Wave a first-and-goal on the two. A direct snap to Holman brought a 1-yard touchdown with it, and then Holman ran in the two-point conversion try to put Newark Catholic up 27-6, with 0:20 left in the half.
At the 10:18 mark of the third quarter, Holman exploded up the gut of the Vikings' defense to pick up 32 yards. Holman went for 26 yards with 9:03 left in the quarter to set the offense up with a first-and-goal from the seven. Holman then took the ball the final 7 yards to make this a 33-6 game, with 8:24 showing on the clock.
Goldsmith again was wide open, allowing Angus to easily hit him for a 28-yard gain, with 5:19 left. Five seconds later, Golden scored on a run of 6 yards. Nate Gardner batted the two-point conversion pass away to keep this a 34-12 game.
Chupka hauled in a pass and rumbled and stumbled his way to a 42-yard gain, with 4:17 left. Landon Cox made a nice catch for a 32-yard score to make this a 41-12 game with 3:27 left in the quarter.
The fourth quarter was mainly the Newark Catholic 2nd unit running the ball up the gut three times and then punting the ball. The biggest play of the quarter came when Hal Gillespie picked off a Vikings pass with 5:35 left in the game.
