This was my first Ironton game without my late friend Mike Keller. I could not bring myself to sit on the home side where Mike and I sat, so I went over to the visitors' side.
Bloomington South headed into this game 6-0 while Ironton came in 5-1, with their only loss coming in overtime to state power Big Walnut. The crowd on the home side was full as it always has been when I am there, and for South, they brought nearly 300 fans, which isn't bad, given they had a long drive.
Hayden Clark picked up 2 yards to get things kicked off for the Panthers.
The Panthers had driven into Ironton territory, but an ill-advised pass by Duncan Combs was easily picked off at the 2-yard line by Tyson Harvey with 8:29 left in the opening quarter.
Wyatt Wolfe, by far the best quarterback I have watched this season, threw a little pass to Kayden Edwards, who broke a tackle, used his speed to reverse field, and picked up 48 yards on the play. Wolfe found Easton Caudill for a gain of 27 yards with 6:13 left. The drive ended when Beckham Waginger hit the right upright, causing his 26-yard field goal to be no good with 4:41 left in the quarter.
With 10:40 left in the half, Wolfe went to Caudill, who went 74 yards for the first score of the game. Waginger was true on the P.A.T. to make this a 7-0 game.
The Panthers got a nice 27-yard gain when Combs found Mayson Lewis with 8:50 left in the half. The Panthers' drive ended with a missed field goal from Samuel Stolberg at the distance of 45 yards. Stolber had hit a 50-plus-yard field goal during warmups.
Wolfe hit Edwards for 18 yards, then he hit Brock Biggs for 29 yards. With 2:49 remaining in the half, Caudill picked up 11 yards to set the Fighting Tigers up first-and-goal at the one. Caudill scored from a yard out, and that was followed by a two-point conversion pass from Brycen Mullins to Tyson Harvey, making this a 15-0 game, with 2:42 left.
In the last 0:39 seconds of the half, the Fighting Tigers offense was back at it. Wolfe hit Edwards for 26 yards, then he hit Nolan Wolfe for gains of 32 and 8, with the latter of the two setting up a first-and-goal from the one. Wolfe found Brycen Mullins for the 1-yard score to make this a 22-game.
Early in the third, Wolfe found Nolan Wolfe for a gain of thirty. No points resulted on this drive. With 7:07 left facing a fourth-and-one from their own ten, the Panthers rolled the dice and came up with a seven when Hayden Clark found enough space to pick up three. Combs found Lewis for gains of 25 yards and 11 yards, but the Fighting Tigers' defense found their footing and kept the Panthers off the scoreboard.
Wolfe connected with Nolan Wolfe for a gain of thirty-four to set up a first-and-goal from the four. From there, Tyson Harvey eased into the end zone to make this a 30-0 game.
The lone score in the final stanza came from a Wolfe to Kayden Edwards, who made a sweet little stop-and-go move to fake out a tackler, and then the speed demon went 85yards for the score to give us the final score of 37-0.
