(Game Report) South 23 North 9 (IND)
Yesterday afternoon after working out in Columbus, Ohio I made the three plus hour trip to Decatur Central High School in Indiana to cover the Indiana North Vs. South game. This was the 2nd time I have covered this one. The crowd was large though they were a little subdued for most of the game.
The South offense started out with a band with Devin Craig (Lapel) finding Davion Davis (Ben Davis) for 16 yards. The Craig found Matthew Young (Switzerland County) for 38 yards. The South drive ended when Brady Trebley (Cascade) was stuffed short of the first down on fourth and one by Kallen Quaderer (Mississinewa), with 6:51 left in the opening quarter.
The South defense got a big play when Slade Fell (Northview) slung Derion Morris (East Chicago) down for a loss of three. At the 1:31 mark of the first quarter the South defense came up even bigger when Luke Freel (Bloomington North) picked of a Brady Elish (Andrean).
Fifty seconds into the 2nd quarter Craig found the Kendrick Pennybaker (Hamilton Southeastern) for a gain of 21 yards. Pennybaker at times, looked like a skilled vet playing against a bunch of first time players. The drive again would end without any points being scored.
The South defense got a nice play from Jalonnie Reid (Warren Central) stopped Jaydon Lineberry for a loss of two. The North offense would get a nice 18 yard completion from Rylee Biddle (East Noble) to Rynell Lewis (Merrillville), with 5:04 left in the half. Lewis looked like he could break off a long gain each time he was thrown to, but the South defense remained disciplined and never allowed that to happen. The 14 play, 91 yard drive ended with Blake Vandenburg (Mishawaka) nailing a 33-yard field goal putting the North up 3-0, with 3:02 left in the half.
Trebley would hit Pennybaker for 47 yards to get the South offense moving, with 2:46 left in the half. Trebley would hit a very dangerous Ethan Vecera (Centerville) for the 30-yard touchdown to make this a 6-3 game, with 2:17 left in the half. The PAT was missed by Jaxon Revell (Providence).
The North offense went back to work with Biddle hitting Channing Glick (Harrison West Lafayette) for 46 yards to help set up a 40-yard field goal from Vandenburg making this a 6-6 game, with 31.7 seconds left in the half.
The South defense would get a nice play from Alex Aramboles (Westfield) and Alex Fisher (Brownsburg) when they teamed up to get to Elish for a loss of 8-yarrds with 8:42 left in the third quarter. The 16 play, 73 yard drive, that featured all run plays except the 28-yard field goal by Vandenburg to put the North up 9-6 with 4:41 left in the quarter.
Trebley would end the quarter with two completions. First, he found Jordan Palmer (Brownsburg) and then he went back to Mr. Big Time, Pennybaker.
Just forty-nine seconds into the final frame Trebley went back to Pennybaker for the 8 yard touchdown followed by the PAT from Revell making this a 13-9 nine game.
With 6:05 remaining in the contest Craig connected with Vecera for 21-yards. Craig ended the drive with a 30 yard touchdown to Davion Davis (Ben Davis), who made a tough catch in blanket coverage to make this a 20-9 game, with 5:45 left.
On the ensuing kickoff Ricky White Jr. (Evansville North) plastered Morris holding the talented runner to a short gain. The South defense would get a 10-yard sack from Alex Aramboles(Westfield) on Biddle, with 5:20 left.
The South offense and defense each had one more big play before the fat lady sung her game ending song. First, it was a 39-yard field goal by Revell making the final score 23-9 and securing the South All-Stars their sixth straight win in this game. The final play came when Michael Pugh (Cathedral) sacked Biddle for a loss of 16 yards.
