North 34 South 7 WV
I got up Saturday morning and made the drive from Groveport, Ohio to South Charleston High School to cover the West Virginia North vs South game. I believe they do the all-star game the best by having it on a Saturday and in the afternoon. Fans, parents especially do not for the most part have to worry about getting off of work and rushing to the game. The crowd, again right near where I was setting showed their passion that many of the players did. They got loud and let the coaches know they were not happy about this or that. I did find it head scratching when one group of fans were begging their coach to throw the ball. Those fans had zero clue that their team ended 7-24 passing with a pick and a touchdown.
Dawson Tenney (Buckannon-Upshur) connected with Jack Byrer (University) for 22 yards, with 9:29 left on the opening quarter clock. On the drives tenth play Byrer plowed in from a yard out, after Levi Price nailed the P.A.T. we had a 7-0 North lead with 5:09 left in the quarter. At the 2:53 mark Toby Michael (North Marion) sacked Reece Lilly (ST. Albans) for a short loss as the North defense made it clear the South offense was going to be in for a very long day.
Rob Ball (Logan) and Preston Kovach (Chapmanville) got to Tarran Boda (Fairmont Senior) for a loss of three. The North would try a fake punt at the 9:27 mark of the 2nd quarter with the result being a turnover on downs when, Ryder Hastings (University) was stopped by Malcolm Brown (South Charleston) and Kovach.
The North defense would get to Brown for a loss of two as they again were quick to get their own offense back on the field. AJ Bart (Lincoln) hit Tytan Parsons (Parkersburg) for a gain of 23-yards, with 6:27 left in the half. The five play, 59 yard drive ended with Bart hitting Byrer for a 9 yard touchdown putting the North squad up 13-0 with 5:22 left in the half. The two-point conversion pass was picked off by Brown.
Michael was able to sack Lilly for a loss of eight, and then it was quick work getting their offense on the field as they easily got another stop. We had a 20-0 game, with 2:34 left in the half after Tenney found Parson for the 25-yard score. The drive totaled two plays and went for 30-yards.
The hit of the half came from the South's Lilly who crushed Donte Masters (Wier) with a little under one minute left in the one-sided half.
The North made this a 27-0 game with 7:24 remaining in the third when Patrick Webster (Philip Barbour) picked off a pass and took it to the house from 38 yards out. The other noticeable play in the quarter came on a Tenney to Marcus Reed (Brooke) that was good for 20 yards.
One second into the final frame we had a 34-0 game when Byrer found a wide opened Harrison Hall for the four yard touchdown. With 49.7 seconds left the North decide to go into their bag of tricks, and it backfired in a huge way when Christian Robinson (Capital) picked off the pass made a nice return to give his offense one last chance to avoid the shutout.
With 35.4 seconds left the South team did avoid the shut out when Lilly hit Trey Ward (Chapmanville) for the 33 yard score. Jaxon Brown (Clay County) ended the scoring with his P.A.T. to give us a final score of 34-7.
