(Softball/Game Report) Newark Catholic 6 Northridge 1
Monday took me back to Johnstown, Ohio, to watch the Northridge Vikings battle the Newark Catholic Green Wave. First, I wanted to say thank you to the two coaches, one from each team, that took time to speak with me before and during the game. The Green Wave came in with a record of 9-6 overall but on a three-game losing streak that has seen them outscored 22-3. The Vikings came in 6-12 overall, and they entered on a three-game losing streak where they had been outscored 38-2.
Newark Catholic led 5-1 after two innings and then held on to best the Vikings 6-1. Newark Catholic out hit the Vikings 11-4. The Vikings had four errors compared to just one for Newark Catholic. Both teams had two extra base hits, with all of those hits being doubles. On the base path the Green Wave swiped three bases, with the Vikings getting one.
Ellie Reese threw the complete game for the Vikings. She gave up nine hits, 4 earned runs, 1 base on balls, and 2 strikeouts. Veronica Bailey picked up the win. She threw 4 innings, gave up 3 hits and 1 earned run, had 11 strikeouts, and did not walk anyone. Aly Rothweiler pitched three innings, giving up one hit, striking out two, and she did not walk anyone.
Cheyann Severance, Ellie Reese, Gracie Smith, and Nya Van Ostran each had a hit for the Vikings. Reese and Smith had doubles. Reese had the only RBI.
For Newark Catholic, Jahni Whitney and Veronica Bailey had a double each, with Bailey having a two-hit game. Aly Rothweiler also had two hits, as did Joanna Bailey. Brooklyn Kurtz, Avery Sullivan, Ela Valenzuela, and Joanna Snider each had a single.
Joanna Bailey had 3 RBIs, leading the Green Wave. Kurtz, Veronica Bailey, and Rothweiler each had an RBI.
