LOOKING AHEAD TO MY 2026 SEASON
As the 2025 high school football season lies in the past, I now start looking forward to the 2026 season. I reflect on some of the issues that have to be fixed, as well as the good aspects of not only going to the games, but also covering them.
If things go as planned, I will start the 2026 season off with a trip to Idaho, North Dakota, and South Dakota. This trip will be as much for seeing new states as for catching new and different styles of football, including some more nine-man football games.
I plan on doing state finals in Ohio. Indiana and Texas again, and they have thoughts on doing Pennsylvania because it is now on a different weekend than Ohio. I am also hoping to make it back to Iowa to catch all 14 of their state semi-final games that are played inside the Uni-Dome.
I have a couple of new teams to me to get off of my list. I plan on hitting a game with Toledo Waite so that I can say I have watched all the Toledo City League teams play. That list also has Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus City League teams on it. I should work on the Senate League in Cleveland. But those games get canceled too much to risk making the long drive up there.
As for new teams outside of Ohio, the only thing I hope to do this season is catch Poca, West Virginia, play. I will, if I get this accomplished, to make sure they are facing a team I have not watched play before.
Some things I would love to see get fixed as far as covering the games goes are schools having updated rosters available online. I figure every school has a student good with computers; they could offer that student free tickets to keep the team roster/website updated.
I know this one is not really ever going to happen, but schools should have their PA person be consistent on making their calls. The best I have found recently is the guy who has done both of the home games at Thomas Worthington. He calls out the numbers of the players, if it was a run or pass, as well as who made the tackle and the yardage the play went for.
This last one is something that some of the Columbus City League schools do. Have updated rosters available at the ticket booth. They simply have the rosters on one piece of paper with the roster on each side.
