Glenville 45 Shelby 7

The Division 4 championship game put Cleveland Glenville against Shelby. Shelby (14-0) came in 14-0, with a high-powered offense and a suffocating defense. Glenville (11-3) lost to Avon, Lakewood St. Ed, and Hoban. Their tough non-league schedule prepares them for the playoff and helps offset one of the weakest league schedules in the state.

This one started off with the Tarblooders' defense showing they were going to be a thorn in the side of the Whippets' offense all game long by holding them to four yards on their first drive.

The Whippets' defense returned the favor as they stood tall on their first series, holding the fast, dangerous offense to nine yards. Both defenses continued to stay tough, giving up a combined seven yards.

The first score of the game came on a special teams play by Glenville, who got a ninety-two-yard punt return by Jaquan Gibson followed by the PAT by Eniere Lemon 34 to make this a 7-0 game with 1:19 left in the quarter.

The Whippets would show some life on their next drive when Brayden De Vito threw a strike to Brady Bowen for a 25-yard gain to the Glenville thirty-three-yard line. A personal foul was called on Jordin Johnson, giving Shelby a first down on the Glenville eighteen-yard line. Luke Blevins raced to a 17-yard gain to set up first and goal on the one. Michael Shepard used the work of his lineman to make this a 7-6 game. Everett Harris locked this one up at seven with his PAT, with 11:39 left in the half.

A 34-yard field goal by Lemon gave Glenville a 20-7 lead that turned out to be the beginning of the end for Shelby. The drive consisted of 8 plays, 40 yards, taking 1:37. Romell Phillips picked up 42 yards on the drive, with the big run going for 31 yards.

On the next Glenville drive, Phillips added 18 yards to his total, while Chris Newell Jr. topped the drive off with a 14-yard touchdown run, making this a 16-7 game, with 5:36 left in the half.

Glenville would go 75 yards for another touchdown on their next drive to go up 24-7. Phillips had a sweet 24-yard run right up the heart of the Whippets' defense. Arvell Nelson hit Joseph Staffold for 14 yards. The touchdown came on a Newell Jr. 6-yard run followed by a two-point conversion pass with 0:57 left in the half.

Glenville started their next scoring drive with 5:59 left in the third quarter. Nelson hit Saffold for a 31-yard gain to set the offense up first and ten on the Whippets' 20-yard line. Da'Von McDougle took the ball to the five with a 15-yard run. Nelson hit Lemon for the touchdown from 5 yards out, then Lemon hit the PAT, making this a 31-7 game, with 2:01 left in the third.

The Glenville defense continues to make quick work of the Shelby offense, giving up very little after the Whippets' only score of the game.

Glenville would get back to work with 11:48 left in the game. London Hearn picked up 15 yards going right at the heart of the defense. Nelson ended the drive with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Saffold to make this a 38-7 game.

The last scoring drive for Glenville came on a 14-yard run from Uriah Webber to make the final score 45-7.
