Avon 37 Anderson 20
The 54th annual Ohio State football championships got started with a rematch from 2024. Avon vs. Anderson out of Cincinnati—this time there was no snow, but the cold was still a big part of this game.
With 7:50 left in the opening quarter, Anderson was back to punt when a bad snap led to Nick Rosieelo being thrown down for a loss of 24 yards by Lance Dawson and turning the momentum on the Avon side.
It would take Avon just two plays to go the 17 yards needed for the first score of the game. The scoring play came on a 15-yard pass from Blake Elder to Fin Jerdonek. Jerry Clements snapped the ball to Jerdonek, who held the ball for the PAT kick by Jensen Petro, making this a 7-0 game, with 7:16 showing on the clock.
The Raptors would get a 12-yard catch from Tysin Weaver, who easily caught the pass from Owen Scalf. Scalf would hit Weaver twice more on the drive for 23 yards. The drive would end with Scalf punting 41 yards to the Raptors' 13-yard line.
Elder would hit Cam Wendell for 41 yards to get the drive started, then Quiante Smith would rush three times for 24 yards to set up a 22-yard touchdown pass from Elder to Caden Clapham, making this a 14-0 game, with 2:39 left in the quarter.
Scalf was taken down by Eian Englehart and Anthony Dido for a loss of 3 yards with 1:13 showing on the clock. Right before the quarter came to a climax, Elder used his legs to pick up 17 yards. Smith rushed twice, picking up 8 yards, then Wendall picked up 5 yards on two carries to set up an Elder-to-Caeden Bennett 7-yard touchdown pass to make this a 21-0 game, with 9:32 left in the one-sided half.
On the Raptors' next drive, Scalf hit Weaver for 12 yards, and then he connected with Jordan Davis for 11 yards. Things continued to look good when Scalf found Cooper Kathman for 12 yards. The drive ended, though, with Scalf getting sacked for a loss of seven by Lance Dawson, forcing a turnover on downs.
The Raptors' defense dispensed of the Eagles' offense, forcing a punt and getting their own offense back on the field in just four plays.
Once the offense got back on the field, Jordan Davis made a catch for 18 yards, and then Kathman made it first and goal from the one with a 43-yard catch. Scalf plowed in for the 1-yard touchdown. After Maddux Snider hit the PAT, we had a 21-7 game, with 5:18 left in the half.
Jerdonek was hit for a loss of four when Brady Huhn and Reid Baker took him down. With 3:47 left in the half, Elder hit Grant Barr for a gain of twenty-four, then he ended the drive hitting Barr for a 37-yard touchdown, making this a 27-7 game, with 2:18 left in the half.
Before the half ended, Scalf hit Tegan Jallick for 39 yards, then Scalf was sacked by Eian Englehard for a loss of three.
The Raptors offense got a Scalf to Ryan Stolarski for a 29-yard pass just 0:52 seconds into the third quarter. Scalf was tackled by Nolan Robke for a loss of one, and an unsportsmanlike conduct flag was thrown on Mike Windsor, taking the ball back 15 yards, with 10:18 left in the third. Scalf and the offense recovered nicely with a Scalf to Brayden Moore touchdown pass from 12 yards out. The PAT was blocked by Dawson, leaving this a 27-13 game with 9:43 left in the quarter.
With 5:12 left on the clock, Scalf was picked off by Jairel Fenton. The ensuing drive ended with Smith scoring from 7 yards out to make this a 34-13 game, with 1:35 left in the quarter.
Scalf ran for 22 yards before the quarter came to a close. Scalf ended the drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Weaver, making this a 34-20 game with 11:55 left.
The Eagles used a 30-yard catch from Clapham to set up the last score of the game, and that came on a 30-yard field goal by Petro, making this a 37-20 game.
Before the game ended, each team had a big play. For Anderson, it was a 25-yard catch from Kathman, and for the Eagles it was a 39-yard run by Smith.
