Youngstown Chaney 10 Youngstown East 6
Saturday afternoon took me to Youngstown to watch the last-ever battle on the football field between Youngstown Chaney and Youngstown East. The two schools will become one next year and have a brand new name. This would be my first time catching a game at Judge William Rayen Stadium and my first time seeing both of these teams play.
East would get a 21-yard run from Tristan Pollard with 5:41 left in the opening quarter. Chaney would get a nice defensive play from Kentrell Lenoir, who got to Antwan Williams for a loss of two, with 4:11 showing on the clock. The Cowboys defense had the last big play of the quarter with Josiah Padgett and Josiah Henderson sacking Jaden Erving for a loss of four.
Still scoreless with 10:01 left in the half, Chaney was facing a fourth and one when Dewayne Thompson Jr. picked up 4 yards to move the chains. Asusante Mickle looked to have hit Thompson for a 19-yard score, but a holding penalty negated the score with 8:42 left in the half. Chaney would have another touchdown called back on the drive before finally punting the ball away.
Erving picked up 11 yards with 4:27 showing on the clock to give the Golden Bears the first down. Erving was sacked by Lenoir, losing 7 yards in the process, with 3:54 left in the half. Erving was sacked again at the 2:26 mark of the quarter when Deshaun Matlock took him down for a loss of seven.
With 0:44 left in the half, Thompson was taken down by Tyris Davis. The Cowboys ended their 10-play, 60-yard drive with a 39-yard field goal from Eder Gomez as time expired in the half.
A bad snap led to Mickle puttingg the ball on the turf just 0:17 into the 2nd half, and pouncing on the ball for the Golden Bears was Khalil Mason at the Cowboys' 24-yard line.
Tyris Davis picked up 19 yards on a nice run to set the offense up first and goal from the five, with 10:54 left in the quarter. The five-play, 24-yard drive closed out on a 1-yard touchdown run from Erving. A bad snap led to the two-point conversion failing, leaving this a 6-3 game, with 9:44 left in the third quarter.
Kentrell Lenoir had a nice run but coughed the ball up before hitting the ground, and making the recovery for the Golden Bears was Antwan Williams with 8:31 showing on the clock.
Erving would be picked off by Alex Hill wearing number one. The ensuing Chaney drive ended with a 38-yard field goal being missed. With 4:14 left in the quarter, a bad snap went over Erving's head, rolling into the end zone, where Sidney Davis recovered it for a Chaney touchdown. Gomez was true on his PAT kick to make this a 10-6 game.
The Golden Bears would get a sweet 23-yard run from Eriving before the quarter closed.
The fourth quarter produced zero points but had some nice moments. Jahkir Davis recovered a punt for the Cowboys on a punt return, with 9:29 left in the game. Thompson hurdled a player to pick up 11 yards, with 8:45 left. Thompson took the ball to the Golden Bears' 3-yard line with an 8-yard run with 7:45 left. Thompson was dropped for a 6-yard loss by Zywaun Perkins with 6:29 left. It appeared Thompson fumbled the ball with Mark Butler recovering it for East, but the refs ruled Thompson down. Gomez missed another field goal on the next play. Erving picked up 25 yards, but the drive ended with the last big play of the game, with Thompson picking off the Erving pass.
