Willard rips Plymouth 50-28

Last night I ventured to Plymouth High School to watch the battle between the visiting Willard Flashes and the hometown team, Plymouth Big Red. Williard blew out South Central (46-12) last week, while the Big Red was blown out by Lucas 51-0. At Plymouth there was no charge for parking, and there was no reserved seating.

Jake Rothhaar would connect with the speedy Paxon Flores for a gain of 29 yards to get the ball rolling for the Flashes. Hard running, A.J. A.J. A.J. Speller picked up 10 yards. The 14-play, 80-yard drive came to a climax on a Rothhaar-to-Flores 7-yard touchdown pass, making this a 6-0 game with 5:43 left on the first quarter clock.

Keegan Beverly coughed the ball up, and making the recovery for the Flashes was Flores. He then raced nearly 50 yards for the game's 2nd touchdown, making this a 12-0 game, with 2:39 left on the clock. After Rothhaar hit Flores, we had a 14-0 game.

Just nine seconds into the 2nd quarter, Rothhaar had his pass tipped and picked off by Weston Kammon. The Big Red would go for it on fourth and long, and that decision turned out to hurt them when Lincoln Distl was sacked by Grady Vaughn.

Rothhaar hit Flores for a gain of 49 yards, then Rothhaar made this a 20-0 game on a 1-yard touchdown run, with 7:41 left in the half. The drive went for 71 yards, taking only 5 plays.

The Big Red showed some life when Isaiah Miller broke a tackle and then raced for a 67-yard touchdown. Strong-footed Gage Stoved hit the PAT, making this a 20-7 game, with 6:43 left in the half. Not seen by many, but before the kick, the starting holder had to leave the game, and stepping in was Ben Trimmer, who brought the snap down with no problems.

Rothhaar hit Grant Poston for a 75-yard score, then Rothhaar converted the two-point run to make this a 28-7 game, with 6:07 showing on the clock.

Flores picked a sack on Distl for a loss of five. Rothhaar found Potson for 30 yards, but the drive and half ended when Dillon Schunatz sacked Rothhaar.

The third quarter took forever with a lot of flags being thrown. In all, for the game there would be 19 penalties accepted, with 15 of them being on Willard. Ethen Keefe had five 15-yard penalties called on him. The Big Red got the first break of the 2nd half when Poston muffed the punt, and making the recovery was Jeric Tacket to give the home team the ball. The short drive of 9 yards took just one play, with Miller doing the scoring, making this a 28-14 game, with 9:36 left in the third quarter. Rothhaar used his legs to score from 4 yards out, making this a 34-14 game at the 4:18 mark of the quarter. Miller scored his third touchdown of the game on a fine 51-yard run to make this a 34-21 game.

Flores dashed into the end zone on a 16-yard run, followed by a 2-point conversion run by Rothhaar to make this a 42-20 game, with 10:19 left in the game.

Speeler sacked Distl for a loss of six, then Flores threw Keegan Beverly down for a loss of two. Flores picked up a sack that sent Distl back 6 yards. Flores would get a sack on Distl on fourth and long, forcing a turnover on downs with 7:35 left.

The Flashes' offense got a 23-yard pass from Rothhaar to Flores to help set up a 12-yard run from Speller followed by a two-point run from Rothhaar, making this a 50-21 game. The final score of the game came on the fourth touchdown from Miller, a 4-yard run, making the final score 50-28.
