Paris holds off Williamsburg, 36-32

Friday night took me to Paris, Kentucky, to see the Greyhounds (1-0) battle Williamsburg (1-0) on the orange turf. The crows, all of which were set on one side, were large, for two bigger schools. Tickets, I was told, were six bucks; there was no fee for parking and no reserved seating.

The Greyhounds' defense easily stopped the Yellow Jackets on their first drive, forcing a punt. On the punt, a bad snap got away from punter Hayden Kleinert, with the result being a safety giving Paris the 2-0 game, with just 0:24 going off the clock.

On the ensuing Paris drive, facing a fourth and five, Traden Murrell caught an 11-yard pass to move the chains. The drive ended with Madi Bell plowing through the defense for a 2-yard score. The PAT was blocked, keeping this an 8-0 game, with 8:09 showing on the clock.

This became a 16-0 game when Brandon Santiago picked off a pass and raced 65 yards for the score, then Madi Bell ran over Noah Jones, with 7:36 still left on the clock.

Xaiver Quant would show that the Yellow Jackets had some sting left in them when he got to Brandon Smith-Santiago for a loss of seven, with a little over a minute left in the quarter. Guy Turner found Zarion Snowden for 18 yards on fourth and seventeen.

Paris would end a 9-play, 68-yard drive just 0:10 seconds into the 2nd quarter, when Turner used his legs and speed to sprint to a 20-yard touchdown. Bruce Hayden made this a 23-0 game with his PAT.

We had a 30-0 game when Santiago broke a tackle to go 47 yards for another Greyhound touchdown with 7:55 left in the half. The drive totaled three plays and 65 yards.

Eli Meadors picked up 14 yards for the Yellow Jackets, but a bad snap and a muff gave the ball back to Paris when Brajion Smith-Santiago recovered the ball on the Greyhounds' 8-yard line. Bell would have the last big play of the half when he raced to a 42-yard run for the Greyhounds.

The Yellow Jackets pulled off a sweet onside kick to start the 2nd half when Ethan Moses pounced on the kickball at the Pairs 49-yard line. Eli Meadows picked up 26 yards to get things going on the drive. The drive ended on a Nick Hale 7-yard touchdown run. A two-point conversion try was snuffed; a bad snap allowed Aiden Goff and Zavyer Elam to stop Reece Hatcher to keep this a 30-6 game, with 7:49 left in the third quarter.

After the Yellow Jackets got the ball back facing a fourth and eight, Hatcher found Peyton Hamilton for a gain of 20 yards. Reece found Trenton Cornett for 17 yards to help set up their next score. The score came on a Hatcher-to-Hamilton 13-yard touchdown pass to make this a 30-12 game, with 3:39 left in the quarter.

Kaden Fields was able to recover the onside kick to put the Yellow Jackets offense back on the field. Hatcher and the offense needed just two plays to light up the scoreboard again. The scoring play came on an 18-yard pass from Hatcher to Hamilton, followed by a two-point conversion run from Eli Meadowms to make this a 30-20 game.

With 11:09 left in the contest, Brandon Smith-Santiago made the hit of the game when he leveled Chease Meddles, knocking him out of the game. This became a 4-point game when Hatcher hooked up with Trenton Cornett for a 17-yard score, with 10:59 left.

The Greyhounds' offense would get a much-needed 42-yard run by Bell, with 7:10 left in the game. Bell ended his day with 16 rushes. 135 yards, with one touchdown. The Greyhounds' final score came with 6:12 showing on the clock, with Turner finding Brandon Smith-Santiago for the 18-yard touchdown to make this a 36-26 game. Brandon Smith-Santiago would end his day with 2 receptions for 32 yards and a score. He rushed for 50 yards on 2 carries and a score. Guy Turner ended his day going 9-15 for 118 yards and 1 touchdown.

The final score in this one came when Hatcher connected with Hamilton for the 18-yard score, making the final score 36-32 Paris.
