New London 28 Millersport 14
Last night I made another trip to Millersport to watch the Lakers battle the New London Wildcats. For me, it was the first time seeing the Wildcats play. The Lakers' home side was full of fans, and there were many sitting and standing to the right of the home-side bleachers. The Wildcats, who had a long drive brought close to 100 fans.
The Lakers got a 13-yard run from Jason Wells, who broke a tackle and then reversed field to pick up the yards. Brock Wright coughed the ball up, and making the recovery for the Wildcats, with 9:32 left in the opening quarter, was Oliver Harrison. Jackson Rawlins would get to the Wildcats quarterback Jackson Mencl for a loss of seven just 27 seconds later. The first quarter was moving along, and with 5:09 left on the clock, Riley Zabor got to Lakers quarterback Nicholas Yingling for a loss of a yard on one of the hardest hits of the game. Yingling would throw a wounded duck up for grabs, and making the pick for the Wildcats was Zabor.
The Lakers used a 33-yard run by Yingling to set up a touchdown pass to Landon Ailes from 21 yards out. Wells converted the two-point run to give the Lakers the 8-0 lead with 8:46 remaining in the half.
A 20-yard run by Mencl gave the Wildcats a big first down with 5:44 left in the half. A 24-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Mitchell brought the Wildcats a step closer at 8-6. A two-point conversion try failed when Hunter Chandley was stuffed.
A bad snap led to Yingling losing 6 yards when Logan Hess and Ethan Koch brought the quarterback down, ending the tight first half.
Chandley chugged his way to an 18-yard pickup to get the Wildcats' offense started in the 2nd half. The 4-play, 70-yard drive would end with a 41-yard run by Mitchel to give the Wildcats a 12-8 lead with 9:53 left in the third quarter.
Yingling suffered another sack when he was brought down by Chandley for a loss of 10 yards, with 9:29 showing on the clock. Yingling faced pressure all night as the defensive line and linebackers for the Wildcats dominated the game.
The Wildcats faced a 3rd and 15 with 2:52 left in the quarter when Mitchel brought in a pass for a 34-yard pickup. The 10-play, 74-yard drive ended on a 3-yard touchdown run by Chandley. A two-point pass completion to Oliver Harrison made this a 20-8 game. with 2;37 left in the quarter.
Yingling connected with Wells to finally breathe some life into the Lakers offense for a gain of 11 yards, with 11:50 left in the game. A 13-yard run by Brock Wright gave the Lakers a first and goal from the Wildcats' 4-yard line. A 4-yard touchdown run by Wells made this a 20-14 game, with 10:08 left.
The Wildcats put the game out of reach with a 2-yard run from Chandley, and a two-point conversion run by Chandley made this a 28-14 game, and that would be the way the game ended.
