Hebron Christian 29 North Atlanta 22 (Georgia)
Game three of the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic took place at West Forsyth High School, pitting the Hebron Christian Lions against North Atlanta. Last season, the Lions finished 10-2, while the Warriors went 9-2. For the Lions, they were seeking their 94th victory in school history, and the Warriors were hoping to gain their 129th victory.
The Lions would get the first big break of the game when Beau Bennett pounced on the ball after a bad snap to the Warriors punter, with 9:19 left in the opening quarter. Kingston Adams would register a sack on Lions quarterback Michael Kyles Jr. for a loss of seven yards at the 8:32 mark of the quarter. Later on the drive, the Lions faced a fourth and seventeen on the Warriors' twenty-nine-yard line. Deciding to go for it turned out not so good, as a pass fell incomplete. With 4:05 left, Benji Blackburn, who fielded the punt, was hit by Stroud Morris, causing a fumble that was recovered by Barrett Greene, giving the Lions the ball. Devon Caldwell would break several tackles on his way to a seventeen-yard pickup. The four-play, a thirty-yard drive, ended on a three-yard run by Caldwell, who took the direct snap. Lucas Ardeu would be true on his P.A.T., making this a 7-0 game, with 3:46 left in the quarter. The quarter ended with the North Atlanta defense registering two nice plays. The first came when Amari Hudson picked up a sack. Then Adams slung Jarvis Marthurin down for a loss of seven yards.
Marthurin would haul in a nicely thrown ball from Michael Kyles Jr. for a big thirty-six-yard gain with 11:45 left in the half. North Atlanta's defense came up big at the 9:05 mark when Alphonso Dreher crushed Caldwell for a loss of three yards. This became a 14-0 game when, facing a fourth and one, Caldwell broke a tackle and scampered in for the eleven-yard touchdown. The drive totaled seventy-eight yards and lasted for twelve plays. It looked like Bryce Willingham had a pick, but pass interference was called along with an unsportsmanlike penalty, allowing the Lions to keep the ball. Kyles would muff the ball, allowing Johnny Diedrich time to get into the backfield to get Kyles for a loss of eight. The Warriors ended their final drive of the half when Weston Goodman hit Josh McCullough for a five-yard score. Sebastian Montag made this a 14-7 game with his P.A.T.
Caldwell was introduced to Quinn Herring just twenty seconds into the second half, when Herring laid the hit of the game for a four-yard loss. Cash Coats and Company would sack Kyles Jr. for another loss of four, with 10:49 showing on the clock. After the Warriors got the ball back, they threw a pick to Jack Mostiler. Three plays and twelve yards later, we had a 20-7 game when Caldwell scored from thirteen yards out, aided by most of the team pushing him into the end zone. Ardeu ended the third quarter scoring with a twenty-eight-yard field goal to give the Lions the 23-7 lead.
Back-to-back catches totaling forty-four yards by Cameron Lanier help set up an eleven-yard touchdown run from Bryce Little, and that was followed by a two-point run from Goodman, making this a 23-15 game, with 11:12 remaining. The Lions answered on the ensuing kickoff when Marthurin raced in from ninety-five yards out to make this a 29-15 game. Goodman connected with Josh McCullough for a twenty-two-yard gain and then for a twenty-yard touchdown where McCullough was wide open. The last 2:19 of the game would see Fletcher Turk get to Goodman, holding him to no yards. The North Atlanta fumbled the ball on the Lions' three-yard line, and the refs signaled first down for the Warriors, wrapping up a hard-earned win.
