From day one, when you first met the team, to right now, what has been the biggest change inside the football program?

Our bodies are much different. We are more businesslike when we do our work, and also more confident.

We touched on this a bit during our last interview. Is it time for someone to take the bull by the horns and get some all-star games restarted in Kentucky?

As much as I loved the old KY-TN All-Star, those days have passed, at least for now.

When we last spoke, you had stated that a big concern going into the 2024 season was depth. I know it's only been one season, but how are things going as far as working on that?

Our depth is improving. We are probably one season away from having a legit 5A school depth chart.

What are one or two things that stick out to you from the 2024 season?

 Our inability to finish games.

The huge improvement we have made. We have to learn to keep our mind on one play at a time when things are going well.

Coming off of a 3-7 season, including a five-game losing streak. How important is it for the team to start quick this season?

Win or lose…. Your response the following day is what matters. Mondays are big.

How do you go about choosing your captains?

Each week, the coaches choose them. At the end of the season, it is voted on by a combo of coaches and players.

With college coaches seemingly paying so much to social media, what advice do you give your players on handling their business on X and Hudl?

Be smart and don’t put anything out, stupid. One big advantage for our guys is that, because I am old, I’ve got a ton of contacts. I do very little recruiting business on social media. Most of my work is in person, via text, email, or phone call. No coach can get a player a scholarship. But, after over 3 decades as a head coach, our guys almost always can get a legit evaluation.

How have you changed from the young coach to the veteran coach you are today?

In theory, it should just be much better. Experience is underrated. I constantly evaluate what I do and the results. Then, seek better solutions and processes. That never stops.

In a perfect world, what offense and defense are you running?

There are a ton of great offenses. Defensively, a fundamentally sound 3-4 would cover the field the best.

If you could change any rule in high school football, what rule are you changing and why?

Let the defense decline a false start on the offense or kicking team. That cost us a win over a great Dunbar team in 2003. They flinched, and we blocked the punt for a safety or TD. They got to punt and beat us in OT.

If the team is having a bad practice as the head coach, what is the first thing you are going to say to them?

Own it. Tomorrow has to be better.

Would you share with the readers if any of the seniors from the 2024 team are moving on to play college ball, and like before, where are they going?

Nemo Wilson will be going to Georgetown.

Are you a NASCAR fan?

No.

Where is your favorite vacation spot? Gulf

Shores, but my family loves Seaside.

What is your favorite current TV show or movie?

My goal is to watch Hogan’s Heroes by 10 pm every night. If I can make that happen, I am good for TV.

Movies in the theater are nothing like the old days. There is no new TV I like. Just old reruns. Also… no time for current movies or TV shows. Too much work to do.

Follow me on X @HEARTLANDFAN15

MAO I will use the Hogan's Heroes by 10 pm each night by 10pm along with Movies in the theatre are Also… no time for current movies & tv shows. Too much work to do.
