Awards won or earned: I was named 1st team all district, 1st team all conference, 1st team all county, and best offensive lineman of the team. I believe that is all, but I might have more that I missed.
Post a small recap of last season with personal highlights and any other big moments you have and/or memories you have from last season, whether it be a game, the bus ride to or from the game, or any other thing that sticks out.
Last season my team finished 12-1, losing to Big Walnut in the regional semifinals. We had a perfect season, but there were lots of close calls along the way. One game in particular was very bad; that game was Madison. This game was especially bad because it was raining and the whole team felt sick during it. We went into it thinking we were just going to blow them out because we didn’t see them as a threat, but in the game of football anything can happen. We ended up winning in triple overtime because their kicker missed a field goal to win the game. One last thing that stuck out was last season was my last season to play with all the seniors on the offensive line. I grew close with all of them, and now I will almost likely never be able to have another snap with them by my side. It is sad when I think about it, but now I’m ready for a new group to step up and take their place.
I looked at your Hudl page, and you are listed as playing T, G, C, DE, and DT. Of those positions, which one do you feel you are better at?
I believe I am best at center, as do some coaches, but some coaches say that I am better at defensive tackle.
Of those positions listed above, which one is the toughest to play? Explain.
The toughest position to play is probably center because the snap is the most important part of the play because if it’s bad, then the whole play is bad, and to have to snap and then go head-to-head with a giant nose guard after is also kind of tough, but nothing I can’t handle.
What are your personal goals for the season?
My personal goals for the season are to win state, have a perfect season, and hopefully be named All-Ohio for offensive line.
What are you looking forward to the most this season?
What I am looking forward to the most is going out on the field for perhaps one last time with all my friends that I grew up playing with and knocking some big boys on their butts while I’m at it.
With this coming season being your final high school season, are you approaching things differently than you have in the past? Explain.
I would say that I am approaching it differently than in the past because as I realized this might be my last time to play football, I need to put it all on the line, meaning that every action I take will help me dominate both sides of the line when Friday nights come.
What makes you a good teammate?
What I believe makes me a good teammate is my personality, I think, because I always try to bring others up instead of putting them down for their mistakes. Also, although I may be a little quieter at times, I believe that I have a strong relationship with almost everyone on my team, no matter the position group.
What type of lineman is the toughest to face?
The type of lineman that is the toughest to face for me is really a scared one because all they do is run away and stay back while I’m trying to block them. It’s not that they are hard; it’s just that they ruin my groove.
Who is the best player that you have faced in a game?
The best player I’ve faced in the game was most likely the nose from St. Francis DeSales. He was big and strong and, from what I’ve been told, has some MAC schools looking at him right now.
Who is the toughest teammate to square off against during practice?
The toughest teammate to square off against on my team is Drayston “Budda” Martin. The reason he is the toughest is that he is not only insanely strong but also explosive as well. He will give a great look no matter how tired he or you are, which is the sign of a great football player and teammate.
What does community mean to you, the team, and the school?
The community is a big part of Ashland. I like to think we are the capital of nice people because I haven’t met a single mean person. The team means a lot as well. We have a top-tier coaching staff with lots of compatible players as well, where even if one goes down, I am confident that another will step up. The school is the same way, filled with great teachers helping me improve my intelligence tenfold while being fun as well.
After the season, will you play in any of the all-star games if you are invited?
If I am invited to play in an all-star game, I would love to go out there and have some more fun.
How is the recruiting process going?
The recruiting process is going pretty well; I’ve been invited to lots of camps and junior day visits from schools that are Division 2 all the way up to FBS Division 1 schools.
Could you name a school or two that you are hearing from?
Right now the school I’ve been hearing from the most is Hillsdale College, and the second most is AU, I believe.
Do you feel that you and the team are role models to the younger kids who come and watch you play?
Yes, I believe that I and our team are role models for the younger generations because during the youth camps that we have before 2-a-days start, all the little kids are always extremely happy to be there and learn from us. Also, after every game, little kids say Congratulations and Good job to the star players. Also, I even remember one time that one kid asked for Nathan Bernard’s signature; that’s one smart kid.
What is the worst weather to play in?
The worst weather to play in is hard rain on a grass field because it creates slipping hazards everywhere and it gets you extremely muddy.
Have you gone to an Ashland University football game?
Yes, I have been to multiple Ashland University games.
Who is your favorite athlete?
My favorite athlete of all time would be Joe Thomas because he gave me my respect for the offensive line.
What is your go-to snack?
My go-to snack would have to be cereal.
