South 24 North 6 Big School Ohio All-Star game
My 2025 high school football season started today at Paul Brown Stadium in Massillon, Ohio, where both North vs. South games took place. The big schools kicked the season off. These are the schools in Divisions 1-3. First, I want to say thank you to the great people at Massillon for again treating the media really well with all-access passes and for the pizza and drinks.
A nice run by Gabe Mansell (Copley) picked up 18 yards on the first play of the game. Mansell would cap off the 11-play, 67-yard drive with a pretty pass to a wide-open Troy Hazuda (Clay) in the back of the end zone on the right side. The kick from Anthony Ruggies (Austintown Fitch) was missed, leaving this a 6-0 North lead.
The South All-Stars would need just five plays to answer the score from the North. A pass from Ethan Thanthanavong (Bloom Carroll) was picked up by Nate Lyman (Kings), picked up 56 big yards. Thanthanavong ended the drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Gracen Goldsmith (Hamilton). Mason Keely (Centerville) snapped the ball to Trimonde Henry (Xenia), who held it for the point after kick by Sean Leonard (Xenia) to give the South a 7-6 lead, with 2:13 left in the opening quarter.
Jalen Joyce (Groveport) teamed up with Royce Rachel (Badin) to sack Zach Haus (Boardman) for a loss of 7 yards with 1:31 left in the quarter. Haus would have his ball picked off by the South's Easton Hill (Hamilton Township), who took the ball to the North 15-yard line, with 0:16 left in the quarter.
The ensuing South drive took just two plays to find pay dirt, with Justice Burnam (Anderson) hitting Jackson Davis (Tipp City) for the 7-yard score, making this a 14-6 game with :08 seconds left in the half.
The South looked to be on the prowl again when Thanthanavong connected with RJ Shepherd (Hamilton), who was wide open for a gain of 17 yards. Antonio Martin (Green) picked off the next pass Thanthanavong threw to end the drive, putting the North offense back on the field.
Keely would get to Mansel for a short loss, with 3:33 left in the half. Mansel would be sacked by Caden Walker (Kings) for a loss of nearly 10 yards at the 2:43 mark of the quarter.
The South offense was moving again when Burnam found Shepherd for a 19-yard gain, and then a 13-yard touchdown pass from Burnam to Lyman put the South up 21-6 with 0:53 left in the half.
Keely would stop Janio Williams (Lorain) for no gain, and then on the final play of the half, Mansel was picked off by Quinten Robinson (Centerville).
Two big plays in the third quarter both came from the South. First, it was a 19-yard run by Thanthanavong. The drive ended on a 42-yard field goal by Leonard to give the South a 24-6 lead.
With 11:14 left in the game, Tyreek Lewis (Northland) introduced himself to Lenix, holding the talented runner to a very short game. At the 7:43 mark, Royce Rachel (Badin) and Caden Walker (Kings) combined to stop Lenix for a short gain, with 7:43 left. The South looked poised to score again, but a fumble by Goldsmith was recovered by the North's Daylan Pringle (Massillon) with 2:58 left. The final big play of the game came with 1:21 left, when Robinson picked off Mansel.
