North 10 South 6 Small School Ohio Game
Game two of the 2025 season was the backend of the doubleheader played at Massillon High School, and it was the small school North vs. South game, and it turned out to be a defensive slugfest.
With 6:48 left in the opening quarter, the North was facing a fourth and five, and they elected to go for it. That decision turned out to be a good one when Cohen Klimak (Streetsboro) found JR. Beato (Fairview) for a 15-yard gain and the first down. Twenty-two seconds later, Klimak was picked off by Jake Anton (West Muskingum).
The South would get a 10-yard completion from Isaiah Stephens (New Lexington) to Alex Reese (Martins Ferry) with 6:19 showing on the clock. That drive fizzled out shortly after the play. With 1:49 remaining in the quarter, Brody Lynch (Preble Shawnee) got to Chase Badger (Northwest) for a short loss. Bager shook off the negative play by finding Reese Soltis (Cardinal) for 18 yards. With 0:44 seconds left on the clock, Blake Lawson (Carlisle) tackled Joey Jackson (West Branch) for a loss of seven after Jackson caught a little swing pass.
Eight seconds into the second quarter, Kaleb Wayt (Orrville) hit a line drive kick from 37 yards, putting the North up 3-0. The North would get two good plays by their defense on the next South drive. First, Aidan Dominguez (South Range) got to Demico Harris (St. Bernard-Elmwood Place) for a 2-yard loss. Then Matt Heatwole (Dalton) knocked down a pass to force a turnover on downs. With 4:20 left in the half, the best run of the game occurred when Waylon Rentz powered his way through multiple tacklers to pick up 14 yards. With 0:17 seconds left in the half, Badger connected with Soltis for 17 yards. The drive ended on a Badger to Joey Jackson for the 17-yard touchdown pass to give us a 10-0 game at the half.
Unofficially, in the half, I had the North with 143 yards and the South with 35. The North had run 29 plays and the South 22. The South was lucky to be down just ten. It appeared the big offensive line of the South was losing the power game to the defensive line of the North, and this resulted in the power running game that the South was trying to run shutdown.
The South's defense would get two picks in the third quarter. The first one was by a diving Blake Lawson (Carlisle), and the second was by Anton, his second of the game. The South also got the biggest offensive play of the quarter when Stephens hooked up with JaDynn Martin (Dayton Northridge).
The South would get a 5-yard run on the drive's eleventh play by Preston Talon (Philo), taking the ball to the 1-yard line of the North. This became a 10-6 game with 11:22 left when Talon plowed in from a yard out. Drexel McAmis (Field) blocked Carter Rummer's kick, keeping this a 10-6 game.
Klimak used his feet to pick up 13 yards at the 10:32 mark of the quarter. Marquez Colvin got to the North's ball carrier at the 7:38 mark for a loss of 8 yards. With 2:09 left in the game, the North was driving, but a fumble occurred, and out of the pile for the South with the ball was Silas Jacob (New Richmond). The South would get a nice pass from Stephens to Martin, with 1:38 left. The last big play, maybe the biggest, came at the 1:08 mark when Isaiah Garcia (Clearview) picked off the South's pass to secure the win for the North.
