(Girls)Waterford dominates Hiland 52-34
Tonight at Logan High School, two of the best small school basketball teams met for a trip to the semifinals. Waterford and Hiland. The crowd was large and vocal at times. The referees were inconsistent at times, making it hard to watch.
The opening quarter would see three ties and two lead changes, but from there, it was all Waterford and Kendall Sury. Sury was as solid as any player I have watched all season. She finished with 26 points. I believe she missed five shots all night. Most of her scoring was done inside, where she looked unstoppable. Waterford led 10-6 after one.
The second quarter would see Waterford outscore Hiland 14-8. The best way to describe the play of Hiland in the quarter and the rest of the game was that all but two of their players seemed afraid to shoot the rock. Joplin Yoder (13 points and six boards) and Trish Troyer (15 points and 5 boards) would account for 28 of the 34 points that Hiland would score.
Waterford would outscore Hiland 14-8 in the third quarter. The quarter was, for the most part, a replay of the 2nd quarter, with Waterford showcasing their quickness and their ability to out-hustle the Hawks in every facet of the game. I believe the inconsistent work done by the refs is affecting Highland more, as the Wildcats seem to shrug off the weird calls or no calls and just do what they do.
The final frame was close, with the Wildcats outscoring the Hawks 14-12, thanks to Troyer hitting three threes to keep the quarter close for the Hawks. Waterford would get scoring from five players in the game, with Brynnlee Pottmeyer finishing with 9 points and Elsie Malec chipping in with 8. Avery Wagner had 11 boards to go with 3 blocks and 3 points.
For the game, the Waterford hit 21-46 shots, while the Hawks hit just 13-43. The Wildcats made 3-11 from three-point land, with the Hawks hitting 3-15, with all three coming in the final frame. The Hawks made 7-10 free throws, with the Wildcats hitting 5-11. The Wildcats also won the battle of the boards 38-25.
