Newark Catholic upsets Fisher Catholic 37-36


 

Tonight at Lancaster Fisher Catholic High School, Newark Catholic and Fisher Catholic battled in a non-league basketball game in front of a very big and somewhat vocal crowd. Newark Catholic came in 4-14, on a three-game losing streak, with their last win coming over Sheridan. Fisher Catholic came in 14-4, losing three of their last four. The win was against Fairfield Christian Academy.

The first quarter was very physical as the refs seemed to decide early to let the guys play hard. Neither team could do much on offense as pressure defense and bad luck shooting allowed the Green Wave to lead 10-8 after the opening period.

The second quarter was much of the same, with the Green Wave taking an 18-17 lead into the locker rooms. In the quarter. Both teams were moving up and down the court like quick cats, but again, the shots were not falling, including many layups.

The Green Wave carried the lead 26-25 after the third quarter. Both teams were subbing left and right as the coaches seemed to be looking for the magic combo that would allow their team to take control.

The final frame would see some tough fouls called on both teams, with the biggest being, I believe, an intentional foul on Fisher Catholic allowing Dylan Daube to hit what would turn out to be the game-winning free throw. Daube finished with 13 points. Also getting 13 points for the winners was Griffin Urdarovski. Urdarovski was able to take any guy guarding him off of the dribble and drive to the bucket or make a nasty pass to the open guy. I had Wesley Stone with 7 points for Newark Catholic. The Green Wave had just five players score, with 10 total players getting into the game.

For Fisher Catholic, Sam Tencza had a game-high 14 points, including one three-pointer.

Chipping in with 12 points was Hyde O'Rielley, with three three-pointers. Fisher Catholic had 6 players score, with a total of 10 players getting floor time.

  Yesterday I drove to Portsmouth and met up with my friend Bill Norman after dinner at The Portsmouth Brewing Company before driving over to Spartan Stadium to watch the semi-pro football game and watch the Port City Spartans host the Columbus Fire.
