Newark Catholic takes down Granville Christian 63-41
Tonight I made the drive from Columbus to Newark to take in the last game of the regular season between Granville Christian and Newark Catholic. The Lions came in 6-15 on the season while the Green Wave sat at 5-16. The Lions entered on a two-game losing streak, with their last win coming over Millersport (57-50). The Green Wave also came in on a two-game losing streak, with their last win coming over Lancaster Fisher Catholic (37-36).
Early in the opening quarter, neither team could find a point, then each team picked up the pace, ending the quarter with 29 combined points, with the Green Wave leading 17-12. Griffin Urdarovski got going early for the Green Wave; the senior would score 19 points before his night was complete. He also had some nasty no-look passes that would have made Magic Johnson smile.
The Green Wave led 41-22 at the half. In the quarter, the Green Wave used a fast-paced attack and some nasty defense to blow this one wide open. Wesley Stone had a good quarter, and he would end his night with 8 points.
The Green Wave ended the third quarter with a 51-30 lead. Zack Leija, the Lions 6-2 post man, showed a glimpse of what he could do when his teammates found him inside. He scored 11 points on the night.
The final frame was going along at a night pace with both teams using all of their bench as they were just trying to get to the end of the game. The Green Wave would lead 63-41 with under a minute left when a player from the Lions threw multiple punches at a Green Wave player. The game ended as soon as the refs and coaches got things quickly under control.
Trey Spurrier came off of the bench to total 12 points for Newark Catholic. Alex Nagel also had 8 points for the winners. For the Lions, Thad Hartshorn had 10 points. The two teams will meet next Saturday at the Lions home court in the first round of the OHSAA state tournament.
