Newark Catholic moves to round two with a 68-53 win over Granville Christian
I made my first trip to the home of the Granville Christian Lions for their first-round tournament game against the Newark Catholic Green Wave. The two teams met last week to end the regular season, with Newark Catholic winning 63-41.
Tonight's game was pretty much a replay of last week's game, with Newark Catholic using speed and pressure defense to win by 15 points. The Green Wave played all 13 players who were dressed. allowing the Lions to make the final score much closer than the final would indicate.
Newark Catholic led 17-10 after the opening period as they showed early that speed and defense would be the two big keys in the game. At halftime, Newark Catholic led 37-18. Junior Wesley Stone and sophomore Jaxon Holman had a nice first half for Newark Catholic. Stone would score 14 points total, including two three-point baskets. Holman ended his night with 11 points.
After three, the score was 58-31 Newark Catholic. Thad Hartshorn and Ayden Hernandez were doing some nice things for the Lions. Hartshorn would have 17 points by the time the game was over, while Hernandez would have a game-high 20 points.
The final score would be 68-53. Newark Catholic. For Newark Catholic, Griffin Urdarovski would have a quiet 14 points. For the Lions, Zach Leija banged his way to 12 points.
