Tonight in girls tournament play, the Green Bobcats (22-1) battled the Hiland Hawks (21-4). Hiland would lead 21-12 at the end of one quarter. Early on, it was easy to see that the Hawks were going to try and win this one by nailing down the three. Overall, the Hawks would hit 11-28 from beyond the arc. The Hawks led 35-22 at the half. For Green, they had just two players score in the half. After three, Hiland led 47-30. At one point this was a 37-30 game, then Hiland went on a 15-0 run to all but end this one. As the game went on from my perspective, it appeared all but two of the Green players were afraid to shoot the ball. Overall, Green would have just three players score, with only two scoring from the field. The final would be 57-35 Hiland.

Leading the Hawks with a double-double was Joplin Yoder (15 points and 13 boards). Macy Mullet, Ellie Habeger, and Evie Mast scored 10 apiece. For the Bobcats, Abbie Knapp is listed as a freshman on the roster, though the announcers said she was a sophomore, led the way with 23 points and 13 boards. Matti Hayslip chipped in with 11, and Ava Abrams had 1 point.

Green hit 5-28 three-pointers. Hiland 11-28.

Green hit 13-45 overall with Hiland hitting 18-53.

Free throws, Hiland went 10-12, and Green was 4-5.

Hiland won the battle of the boards. 41-29

Semi Pro: Columbus Fire 8 Port City Spartans 0 (Game called in the third because of fighting)

  Yesterday I drove to Portsmouth and met up with my friend Bill Norman after dinner at The Portsmouth Brewing Company before driving over to Spartan Stadium to watch the semi-pro football game and watch the Port City Spartans host the Columbus Fire. I have been to over 1,500 football games, or close to that amount, and I can say none of them prepared me for what I ended up seeing. The stadium had one set of lights that did not work at all that I had seen before (Jackson State University). One pole had a light missing, and another pole had one single light that did not work at all on the visitor's side, making the field dark. I saw a fan on the Spartans side of the field standing with the players vaping, and I saw a player setting on the bench for most of the game also vaping. The game itself was stopped once when the refs walked off the field for what one player on the Spartans said was because a Columbus player said something about going after the ref with a gun.
