41 yard field goal gives Dover A 37-35 win over Tri-Valley
*Using rosters from max preps and Hudl*
Dresden, Ohio- On Friday night I made my first ever trip to Dresden, Ohio, to watch Tri-Valley host Dover in a Division 3 Region 12 playoff game. This would also be my first time seeing Dover play.
Turnover and drop passes would be two key ingredients in the way this game would play out for the home team, who jumped out to a 21-0 lead. Getting things going for Tri-Valley with a 40-yard diving catch was Kam Karns. From there another 40-yard pass, this one for a touchdown to Ryan Lamonica, followed by the P.A.T. from #8 (Not on either roster) would make this a 7-0 game, with 10:50 left on the clock.
Max Lyall would hit Lamonica for a gain of 26 yards with 9:09 left on the clock. The 6-play, 64-yard drive ended on a 6-yard touchdown run from Isaiah Doyle, making this a 14-0 game with 8:10 showing on the clock.
The Scotties were back at it again at the 4:30 mark when Lamonica made a catch for 39 yards. Facing a fourth and one, Lyall plowed ahead for four yards to move the chains. Lyall ended the 11-play, 98-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, making this a 21-0 game with 2:51 remaining in the opening quarter.
Jack Judkins would connect with Justice Hughes for an 11-yard gain, setting Dover up with a first and goal from the Tri-Valley 8-yard line. Hughes would take the ball to the Scotties one, then Judkins plowed in for the 1-yard touchdown. Jameson Marlatt would make this a 21-7 game with his P.A.T. with 8:38 left in the half.
The Tornados offense was back at it at the 6:63 mark, where Judkins used his legs to pick up 22 yards, setting up a first down at the Tri-Valley 11-yard line with 6:53 left in the half. Judkins ended the drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Hughes, making this a 21-14 game with 5:21 showing on the clock.
Lyall would connect with Hindel for three passes on the ensuing drive, with the long being a 34-yard gain. A Lyall to Keaton Hahn 16-yard touchdown completion made this a 28-14 game with 2:42 left in the half. Hahn leaped up high to catch the pass as he was tightly guarded.
After Judkins used his legs to pick up 12 yards, he would be picked off by Hindel with 5.3 seconds left in the half.
Judkins hit Hughes for 20 yards to get the ball rolling for Dover in the third. A 30-yard run from Daylan Clark set Dover up for what looked like was going to be a score. Lamonica, who on the night would drop what looked to be two sure touchdowns, would atone a little when he picked off a Judkins pass with 9:18 left in the half.
Tri-Valley would give the ball right back to Dover when Jayden Wallace had the striped out of his hands as he faught for extra yards. Dante Clark was the player to come away with the ball for Dover.
Judkins would make this a 28-21 game with 7:12 left in the quarter when he broke free for a 13-yard score. The drive totaled 30 yards, taking just three plays.
Tri-Valley answered the score with a Lyall to Hahn 13-yard pass with 4:00 left in the quarter to make this a 35-21 game. The Tri-Valley drive went for 6 plays and totaled 61 yards.
Dover would get a 17-yard pass from Judkins to Caden Schie to get the drive moving. Logan McClellan would crush Hughes before he could gain anything with 1:47 showing on the clock. Facing a third and ten, Dover would pick up the first down on a Judkins to Colin Bruno 14-yard catch. The 9-play, 76-yard drive ended on a 21-yard Judkins run, making this a 35-28 game with 42.1 seconds left in the quarter.
Wallace would make a Randy Moss-like one-handed catch, but he coughed the ball up after being hit, and making the recovery for Dover was Cooper Connare, with 9:24 left in the game. Clark would be stuffed by Steyr Rognon at the 7:07 mark. Dover Dover would overcome the loss with a Judkins to Hughes 30 yard touchdown to make this a 35-34 game with 6:33 left. After a 15-yard flag was thrown on Dover, Marlatt would be forced to try a 35-yard extra point. He got underneath the ball, causing the high kick to be short, leaving the score 35-34.
The Dover defense would get the ball back after forcing a punt. With 1:42 left, a 16-yard run by Clark took the ball to the Tri-Valley 32-yard line. Then, with 25.3 seconds left, Marlatt would line up for a 41-yard field goal. The snap was spot on, and the kick easily cleared the crossbar, giving Dover the 37-35 lead.
Tri-Valley had one last grasp, but a hail Mary pass fell harmlessly to the ground as the clock hit triple zeros.
