Game report/ Tuscarawas Central Catholic 10 Millersport 6

 

 

 

 

 

 It had been a few years since I had covered a game at Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School. The last time I was there, I left a really good umbrella; this time, I didn't. There were no rosters available when I got there, so I am using the rosters from Hudl; if they are wrong, send your complaints to the schools and/or Hudl.com. One last thing before getting to the game: the Saints were wearing those God awful camoflage jersey that is hard to see the numbers, so it was a crapshoot trying to get the correct number at times, and the PA guy was very inconsistent when calling the play.

The game basically came down to missed tackles and bad snaps costing one team the game, while the winning team just did what they did was run the ball basically up the gut and wait for something good to happen.

Grady Stein was smothered by Mason Coleman and company, as the whole Lakers defense was waiting for him. Once the Lakers offense got on the field, quarterback Caiden Wiseman would be busy fielding snaps that made it hard to get the play off. With 6:04 left, after avoiding a heavy rush, Wiseman scrambled to his right, stopped on a dime, and floated a pass to a wide-open Owen Everitt, who took the rock 57 yards for the score to make this a 6-0 game. Jackson Rawlins was stopped on a two-point conversion run. The drive went for 62 yards in 6 plays.

Rawlins would sack Nicholas Lesiecki for a loss of 6 yards, with 3:47 left in the opening quarter. The Saints' offense would be forced off the field as the Lakers' defense stood tall. 

With 1:01 left in the quarter, Rawlins would stop short on third down by Anthony Love and Parker Davis, forcing a Lakers punt, another part of the game that hurt the Lakers, with bad snaps leading to short punts.

With 18.1 seconds left in the quarter, the Saints got a 67-yard touchdown run from Ellis Jackson and a P.A.T. from Nicholas Lesiecki to take a 7-6 lead they would never give up. For the game, the Saints unofficially finish with a total of 87 yards, with just four of them coming in the 2nd half.

The biggest, or maybe best, play of the night came when Hayden Keller made a one-handed catch for 34 yards. Keller could have had a great night, but he seldom had the ball thrown his way plus his quarterback really did not have time to throw the ball deep, with the Saints' defensive line having a good game plus he was busy trying to handle bad snaps most of the night when he was not directly under center. Caiden Wiseman hit Mason Coleman for 9 yards on a nicely run screen play with 10:45 left in the half. Wiseman would fumble the ball with 8:23 left in the half, with Flynn Renicker making the recovery for the Saints.

Hunter Fulton #6 would bust off a long 17-yard run to get things moving for the Saints. Then Flynn Renicker rushed for 28 yards to the Lakers' 4-yard line with 6:09 left in the half. The Lakers' defense would make the Saints settle for a 21-yard field goal from Lesiecki to make this a 10-6 game, with 3:03 left in the half.

The Lakers would be stopped on the 1-yard line when Ellis Jackson tackled Coleman to end the half.

Defense would rule the third quarter, with most plays being runs up the gut from both teams. One play of note in the third quarter where #17, not on the Saints roster, recovered a Lakers fumble after a bad snap.

The Lakers showed some life on offense in the final stanza with Rawlins busting off a 9-yard run, with 9:44 left. Wiseman hit Coleman for 17 yards on another nicely run screen, with 4:23 left. Wiseman hit Owen Everitt for 25 yards with 3:07 left. The Lakers' last hope ended as Wiseman threw a desperate pass into double coverage at the 3-yard line on fourth down. The Saints would run the clock out from there.
