(Girls) Fairfield Union 47 Lakewood 46

Friday night took me back to Hebron, Ohio, to watch the red-hot Lakewood Lancers, winners of four straight battles, against a very good and deep Fairfield Union squad. The Lancers were in control for three quarters, leading 44-30 and looking like they were going to win their fifth straight game, but Fairfield Union Head Coach Keith Barr said in a press conference that the Lancers were never able to break, leading to a 17-2 run and one-point Falcons win when Maycee Martindill made a highly contested shot at the buzzer. The Lancers had double-digit turnover in the fourth quarter alone. Lancers head coach Ian Green did call some timeouts to try and fend off the rally, but whatever adjustments he made never came close to working. The Lancers looked very lost and sluggish in the fourth quarter, which made sense, seeing as I was told the team had been fighting an illness all week.

Maddie Mitchell had 10 points for the Falcons. Maycee Martindill had three threes and the game winner to finish with 11 points. The girl has a sweet shot. One of her threes came during the big fourth-quarter run. Macie Wolfe came off of the bench, as did Martindell; she finished with 7 points.

For Lakewood, the super sophomore had 16 points; this was the first time I did not see her go for over 20. Jaylie Mass started hot, scoring 9 points, all of them in the first half if my memory is correct. By the time the game was close to over, she looked like she was going to pass out. Hallie Layne also started hot, scoring 7 early points. Senior Anna Crist totaled 6 points for the Lancers.
