2026 Basketball interview with Portsmouth Clay girls Head Coach Drew Emnett

Name: Drew Emnett

School/town: Portsmouth Clay

College: Morehead State University

Can you give the readers a brief history of the coaching jobs you have had?

I have coached at many different levels and several sports. BASKETBALL, SOCCER, BASEBALL, ETC.

What or who first got you started in coaching?

AL OLIVER

What's the most fulfilling part of coaching?

Watching kids catch on and seeing them reach their full potential and exceed things they ever thought were possible

What is the toughest part of coaching?

Making sure to stay your course and drown out the naysayers

How do you go about picking up non-conference games?

N/A

Should there be a shot clock in high school basketball?

No

What are the best and worst changes you have seen in the game during your coaching career?

Best, I believe some of the players are so talented and have great skill.

The worst is probably the numbers problem that many small schools have with their teams.

As the head coach at a smaller school, what do you do to try to get girls out for the team?

Try to get community investment. Unfortunately, I feel like I have not done a very good job at this part and keep trying to work and become better at this aspect.

What has been the biggest win in your career?

My biggest win has not been a game; it was a group of young ladies that played a season where we had lots of injuries and sickness, and watching that group do things they never thought they could push themselves to do.

Which loss has stung the most?

N/A

Where should the state finals be held?

The arena in Dayton is a great place; of course, if you could be more central, it would be ideal, but Ohio State doesn't really want it, so the facility at Dayton and the parking are excellent.

What do you feel needs to be done to get more fans at the girls' game?

Play games on different nights; play games with junior high girls before playing boys and girls varsity on the same evening.

What are you doing in your free time for fun?

Play golf or watch my daughter work with and show her pigs.

What is your favorite current TV show?

Bosch

What scares you?

Failure scares me probably more than anything. I don't like to not see things be done correctly and to have a positive outcome. I strive to do what is correct and always do my best, but it is always a continuous work in progress. We all make mistakes; we just have to get up, learn from them, and keep fighting our way forward.
