Indian Lake 31 Cincinnati Mariemont 14
Friday night I drive to Indian Lake High School, about a 75-minute drive for me. This would be game 62 for me this year, way down from last year and the year before. This also would be my first trip to Indian Lake and the first time seeing the team play.
The Lakers took their time on their first drive, using four runs and five passes to go 78 yards for the game's first score. The score came on a circus-like catch in tight coverage by Colin Bendler on a nicely thrown ball by Bradey Golliday, with 7:43 showing on the clock. Avery Pequignot was true on his PAT, making this a 7-0 game.
Almost two minutes later Mariemont had trouble on a handoff, causing the ball to hit the grass, where Aaron Rapp pounced on it for the Lakers.
On the ensuing drive the Warriors defense got a nice play from Jack Simpson, who got to Bradey Golliday for a loss of five. The Lakers would convert a fourth and seven later on the drive when Golliday found Noah Shirk for 8 yards. Golliday would use his feet to pick up 10 yards with 3:01 left in the one-sided quarter. Noah Shirk ended the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run as his offensive line did the dirty work to make the run look easier than it should have been, making this a 14-0 game, with 1:21 left in the quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff Luke Robinson was crushed by Draden Stevenson after a short gain. The Warriors' drive continued into the 2nd quarter, where Zachary Maier connected with Jack Simpson for 36 yards. The drive came to a climax with Owen Dunning going 3 yards for the score. Will Shteiwi kicked the PAT to make this a 14-7 game. Shteiwi, only a junior, has a really strong leg and looked to me last night to have the skills to be playing on Saturdays in a couple of years, if he chooses to.
One of the biggest differences in the game would be the John Riggins-like running by Golliday. The junior quarterback would display some of his Riggins-like running style when he picked up 15 yards to move the chains, with 6:42 left in the half. Golliday ended the drive with a 14-yard tackle-breaking run for the score to make this a 21-7 game. The drive totaled 80 yards, taking 13 plays.
The Warriors used a big pass from Zachary Maier to Evan List for a gain of 31 yards. The same combo ended the drive with a 27-yard score to make this a 21-14 game, with 1:20 left in the half. List is a junior who looked to be the biggest weapon for the Warriors.
Maier got things started in the 2nd half when he found Simpson for 13 yards on third and ten. The game completely changed 34 seconds later when Indian Lake’s Aaron Rapp annihilated Maier on an option play causing the ball to bounce off his running back’s hands and hit the grass, where Gavin Henry scooped it up and took it 46 yards for another Lakers touchdown, making this a 28-14 game. Maier would be injured on the play and not see the field again. Let's pray the young man has a speedy recovery.
Carson Quaimbao was now in at quarterback for the Warriors, and he threw a short pass to Owen Dunning, who was dropped by Shirk for a short loss, forcing a punt, with 8:19 left in the quarter. Quaimbao would find the talented List for a 37-yard gain at the 4:02 mark of the quarter. The drive ended when the Warriors tried running a fake punt, with Ryan Kreutz being stopped well short of the first down marker when Brody Lewis stuck him.
Golliday found Davis Koehler for 17 yards with 1:02 left in the third. The drive ended with Pequignot hitting a 22-yard field goal, making this a 31-14 game, with 10:29 left.
Lane Kipker would get a sack on Quaimbao for a loss of seven, with 9:10 left. Quaimbao would be sacked again, this time by Franklin Kinney and a few defensive friends, with 8:22 left. Facing a fourth and twenty-five with 7:27 left, the Warriors had no choice but to go for it. Quaimbao would hit Teddy Veidt. One of the refs signals first down. From my seat on the 50-yard line, on the Warriors side, he looked to be a yard short, and the refs got together to discuss things, and they decided the catch was a yard short, causing a turnover on downs and causing several fans around me to call out, "The refs are cheating; they knew where to spot the ball to make sure our receiver was short."
The last big play of the game came in the form of a diving interception by Gavin Henry, securing the Lakers' win.
