Rogers 30 Woodward 14

Using online rosters, so if player names are wrong, it will be because the online rosters have not been updated by the schools.

Thursday night took me back to Toledo for the second time this season. The matchup this time was also the homecoming game for Rogers, who entered 0-7. Woodward came in with a record of 1-6.

With a little over 9:00 left in the opening quarter, a terrible snap led to Rogers quarterback Jerrell White taking a sack by Jordan Sessom for a loss of 20 yards. Once the Woodward offense got back on the field, Jayden Thompson sprinted for 20 yards, with 8:32 left in the quarter. Woodward elected to go for it on fourth down, and that decision turned out not so good, with Thompson being waylaid by KiJyere Mcalister, forcing a turnover on downs, with 5:27 left in the scoreless first quarter.

Charles Hines picked up 43 yards on three carries, including a 5-yard touchdown to put Rogers up 6-0, with :49 showing on the clock. The drive took 6 plays and totaled 75 yards. The offensive line did a nice job on the drive.

#51 for Rogers got to Ronnell Smith for a loss of two, also forcing a Woodward punt. Woodward faked the punt and paid the price in doing so when Kobe Bailey was stopped by #54 and Niheam Moore to put the Rogers back on the field with 1:29 showing on the clock. White would find Marquise Westley with 23 seconds left for a 39-yard touchdown. A successful two-point conversion run from White made this a 14-0 game.

Thompson would connect with Kody Bailey for a 46-yard touchdown, followed by a Thompson-to-Michael Fizer two-point conversion, making this a 14-6 game after one quarter of play.

Rogers would try a fake punt of their own with 7:16 left in the half, and it did not work out well, with Gilvarion Smith being met by no less than five Woodward defenders, who easily stopped the play from going anywhere; it, the play, actually lost 2 yards.

It looked like Marquise Westley had a pick, but he was ruled out of bounds. The Rams would still have the ball, as this was another fourth-down try by the Polar Bears, who had just converted on one with a fine 6-yard run from Thompson on fourth and fourth to keep the drive alive.

Three runs by Shawn Cannon totaled 43 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown. He also converted a two-point run, making this a 22-8 game with 2:06 left in the quarter.

The Polar Bears' offense would need to go just 12 yards for their next score after getting a big return on the kickoff. It would take four plays to hit pay dirt, with Thompson scoring on a 2-yard run to make this a 22-14 game with 0:12 left in the half.

Rogers would get a 37-yard touchdown run from Cannon, with the two-point conversion run successful by White to make this a 30-14 game, with 10:18 left in the third.

White would get picked off by Da'Leon Wiley with 4:05 showing on the clock to put the Polar Bears offense on the field. The highlight of the drive would come on a fourth and five on their own sixteen; the Polar Bears got an 11-yard run from Thompson to move the chains. The Rams defense put the brakes on the drive a short time later. The highlight of the quarter for the Rams came on a 32-yard run by Zephan Birt.

The fourth quarter brought two nice runs for the Rams. The first came from Hines going for 18 yards. Cannon picked up 10 yards, setting the offense up 17 yards away from another score. A pick by the Polar Bears' Fizer ended the threat. The Rams would get a pick of their own with 1:37 left in the game by Marquise Westley.
