Northridge 31 Lakewood 6

Using online rosters from MaxPreps and Hudl

Friday night took me to Northridge High School in Johnstown, Ohio, to watch the Vikings battle the Lakewood Lancers. The Lancers entered 0-9, scoring just 48 points all season. The Vikings were looking to pick up their fourth win of the season. The Vikings stood 3-3 at one point this season.

The Lancers started out well, getting Riley Wheeler for a loss of two with #2 (not on either roster) for Lakewood getting the tackle. Jayce Golden picked up 11 yards for the Vikings in a large part due to poor tackling by the Lancers. @2 for Lakewood would get #81 (not on the Vikings roster) for a loss to bring up third and eleven. The 8-play, 48-yard drive ended on a 46-yard line drive field goal from Charlie Kinkead with 8:08 left in the first quarter.

The Lancers quarterback Garrett Hardway would be dropped for a loss of two when Wheeler and Kameren Lowry dropped him at the 7:11 mark of the quarter. Hardway would find #2 for a gain of 23 yards with 6:35 showing on the clock. Hardway looked to throw a good ball, but as the game went on, the Vikings' defensive line dominated the Lancers' offensive line play after play after play. Wheeler would drop Lukka Vines for a loss of eight, with 3:17 showing on the clock. With 1:17 left in the quarter, the Lancers converted a fourth and six when Matthew Keller picked up 17 yards. The 16-play, 75-yard drive ended on a 5-yard touchdown run by #2. #22 had her PAT blocked, keeping this a 6-3 Lancer lead with 30.9 seconds left in the fast-paced quarter.

The Vikings got a 25-yard run from Golden with 10:28 left in the half. Golden ended the 8-play, 62-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run to make this a 10-6 game. Golden displayed great field vision and took advantage of poor tackling by the Lancers.

The Lancers converted a third and six when Hardway found #2 for a gain of ten. Hardway was sacked by #36 (not on the roster) with 7:43 left in the half for a loss of two. The Lancers' offense would put up 21 yards in the half, after their opening 75-yard drive. The Vikings went on a 10-play, 73-yard drive that featured eight running plays. Capping off the drive on a 10-yard run to make this a 17-6 game was Ty Koehler.

Hardway tried to make something happen with 2:19 left in the half, but his prayer was picked off easily by Wyatt Boston. The Vikings scored again with 24.9 seconds left in the half, with Koehler hitting Colton Isler for the 10-yard score, making this a 24-6 game.

#7 (not on the Lancers roster) fumbled the ball, and recovering it for the Vikings was Carson Beaver, with 9:59 left in the quarter. Three plays later, Golden waltzes into the end zone from 25 yards out to make this a 31-6 game, with 8:47 left in the third.

Hardway was picked off by Kinkead with 9:32 left in the game. Golden picked up 40 yards on two runs, but the drive ended with a punt. #7 for the Lancers had a nice 42-yard run with 6:26 left. There were some turnovers in the quarter, with each team having one. I could not pick up the player making the recovery as the action happened on the far side of the field, and the PA guy was very inconsistent in calling things out. Playing the PA system was hard to hear on the visitors' side. Jamie Odrumsky for the Vikings had a nice play when he got to Lukka Vines for a loss of five, with 4:57 left. Hardway would be sacked by Carson Beaver and Kameren (Dancing Man) Lowry for a loss, forcing a turnover on downs with 3:03 left. The last big play of the game came on a sack by Lowry on Hardway.
