Westerville Central 24 Dublin Jerome 16
Using online rosters for each team from Maxpreps.com and Hudl.com
Friday night took me to Westerville, Ohio, to catch the battle between Dublin Jerome (3-0) and Westerville Central (1-2). After seeing Jerome tonight, I have seen all of the Central Ohio teams in person.
The Warhawks would start this game with a 15-play, 65-yard drive using 12 runs and 3 passes to find the end zone. Omar Bangura would go left and turn upfield, picking up 10 yards to set the first and ten from the Celtics' 23-yard line, with 7:24 showing on the clock. Nate Miller found Cohen Buss for the 13-yard touchdown, then Buss nailed the PAT, making this a 7-0 game, with 3:52 left in the quarter.
With 5:27 left in the half, Miller connected with Cam Huebner, who was tightly guarded, picking up 41 yards. The drive would end without any points being scored.
The Warhawks were on another long drive in the 2nd quarter when Miller found Kevin Blaz for 7 yards, moving the ball to the Celtics' 15-yard line, with 5:05 left in the half. After Rylan Moran was thrown for a 2-yard loss, the Warhawks got the last laugh when Moran ended the 12-play, 74-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to make this a 14-0 game, with 2:04 left in the half.
Nolan Peoples was picked off by Bangura with 1:58 left in the half. The Warhawks would get a 23-yard field goal from Buss as time ran out in the half to take a 17-0 lead. For the half, Westerville Central had 199 yards, while the Celtics had 24.
Moise Crosier got a sack on Peoples, bringing an 8-yard loss, with 10:47 left in the third quarter. Hard running Joey Slates gave the Celtics a first down with his 12-yard run, with 7:22 showing on the clock. Rocco Lombardi threw up a nice pass to Jack Kacherski, who made a leaping one-handed catch near the sideline, and so far for me this year, it was the catch of the year. Lombardi ended the drive with a 13-yard run for the touchdown. After Luca Licata nailed the PAT, we had a 17-7 game, with 5:46 left in the quarter.
The Warhawks were forced to punt on the ensuing drive from their own end zone. The snap was high and over the head of Buss, resulting in a safety to make this a 17-9 game.
Lombardi was hit while running while holding the ball like a loaf of bread, and he coughed the ball up, and the one who recovered for the Warhawks and took the ball all the way to the Celtics' 2-yard line was Crosier, with 3:13 left on the clock.
The drive ended with Bangura scoring on a 4-yard run with 1:42 left on the clock to make this a 24-9 game.
With 10:18 left in the game, #16 Andrew Murlin came out of the pile with the ball that was fumbled. The refs took some time but signaled first and ten for Jerome. Three plays later, Slates used the work of his lineman to go up the gut of the Warhawks' defense for a 32-yard touchdown with 9:31 left in the game, making this a 24-16 game.
Lombardi was sacked for a loss of seven by Braiden Warden with 5:37 left. Lomardi was hit hard and fumbled the ball, with Sahid Kebe landing on it for Central, with 5:09 left.
The Celtics' defense gave their offense another chance, but Lombardi had his pass deflect off of his receiver's hands, allowing Julian Bradley to make the pick.
The game would come down to the very last play, which was a long Lombardi that fell incomplete in the end zone, giving the Warkaws the home win.
* Jack Kacherski is number 81 on the roster, but the PA guy called his name when #3 made the catch.
