Toledo Start 31 Toledo Waite 6

Rosters missing players for both teams on MaxPreps and Hudl

(How hard is it to have complete rosters online?)

Thursday night I made my first trip to Toledo to cover a high school football game. Start and Waite both entered the contest setting at 1-3. In watching the teams warm up, it looked to me like this was going to be a ground battle, as both teams looked very shaky throwing the ball during warmups.

The Start defense got things going when Ronnie Denson and number 21 (not on the roster) got to Carl Foard for a short loss at the 10:50 mark of the opening quarter. Foard shook off the loss by picking up 16 yards on third and ten to keep the drive alive. #8 was dropped for a loss of four with 9:55 left in the quarter by #23 as the start defense kept the pressure up.

Start would get on board when Jonah Tall broke to his right and scampered in from 28 yards out, making this a 6-0 game, with 5:11 showing on the clock. The drive went for 38 yards on 5 plays.

Terron Belle would beat Edward Price and #15 to haul in a 38-yard touchdown pass, locking this one up at 6 apiece, with 4:53 left in the quarter.

Tai'Rese Highsmith was knocked down for a loss of four by Malachi Curry as the Waite defense stood tall at the 10:07 mark of the second quarter. Tall broke free for a gain of 47 yards, with 6:08 left in the half. Start would go up 12-6 when Highsmith pranced in from 5 yards out, with 3:05 left in the half.

Before the half came to a close, #21 from Start recovered a Waite fumble.

Curry and Jaden Trista got to Highsmith for a loss of six as the Waite defense made the first big play in the third quarter. Trista would strike again on the next play when he got to Thompson for a loss of five.

The Start defense got a big play from Taiwon Highsmith, who got to #8 for a loss of ten, with 7:38 left in the third. When the Spartans got back on offense, Tall took the ball 31 yards down to the Waite 1-yard line. From there Tai'Rese Highsmith scored from a yard out to make this an 18-6 game, with 4:26 remaining in the third.

#8 would find #10 for a gain of 17 yards to get the Indians' offense moving. #8 would get picked by Derron Joyce to put the starting offense right back on the field with 2:06 left in the third. One play and 64 yards later, this was a 24-6 game, with Tall running in from 69 yards out, with 1:52 left in the quarter.

Terron Bell #88 for Waite, who looked by far the best receiver on the field, also played defense, where he got a pick with 9:22 left in the game. Bell would make a catch and sprint to a 61-yard gain, with 8:24 left. Bell would go over 100 yards tonight, and if not for a bad night from the passing game, I believe he could have gone over 200 yards. Foard would be picked off by Joyce a play later.

The final touchdown in this one came on a 65-yard scoop and score by Taiwon Highsmith with 3:03 left. #34 came on to nail the PAT to make the final score 31-6. Start.
