Rock Hill 39 Purcell Marian 26

Friday night I made the two-hour-plus drive to Pedro, Ohio, to watch Purcell Marian out of Cincinnati battle Rock Hill. The drive was very long for the Cavaliers, and it affected their fans, as they had just twenty seats on their side. The Redmen bleachers were about 95% full.

The Cavaliers got a nice run of 11 yards from Zyohn Gillespie, who was stopped by Bardy Murrell with 11:47 left on the first quarter clock. The drive ended without any points being scored.

Murrell would scoop up a Cavs fumble and take it to the house from nearly 40 yards out to make this a 7-0 game, with 5:47 left in the quarter.

Gillespie picked up 17 yards to get things going for the Cavs. Quindel Phillips

found Terron Vaughn for 15 yards. The 53-yard, 4-play drive ended on a Gillespie 21-yard run, followed by a two-point conversion by Vaughn, making this an 8-7 game, with 5:02 left in the quarter.

Braylon McClellan coughed the ball up on the ensuing kickoff, and the Cavs came up with it. 6 plays and 13 yards later we had a 14-7 game, with Gillespie scoring on a 1-yard run, with 2:55 left on the clock.

The Cavs would recover the onside kick, putting their offense right back out on the field, with 2:35 left in the quarter. This became a 20-7 game with 0:15 seconds left in the quarter when Gillespie waltzed in from 5 yards out.

Gillespie used some nice moves and speed to pick up 37 yards, with 8:15 left in the half. The Redmen would get a big play by McClellan picking off the Quindel Phillips pass at the 6:38 mark. The Cavs' defense easily stuffed the Redmen's offense on the drive, keeping this a 20-7 game. Phillips would cough the ball up on the ensuing drive, and pouncing on it for Rock Hill was Aaron Workman, with 4:40 left in the half. Dallin Cox hooked up with Workman for a gain of 15 yards. Yaden Bailey rumbled and stumbled in for the 9-yard touchdown to make this a 20-13 game, with 3:21 left in the half.

The Redmen were right back at it with 0:45 seconds left in the half, with Cox hitting Cash Lyons for 30 yards, and then he threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to McClellan to make this a 20-19 game. Cameron Howard missed the PAT, his second miss of the game. His first miss was short, and the 2nd one was wide left.

McClellan, who had more than made up for his fumble on the kickoff earlier in the game, would get sweet revenge when he took the 2nd half opening kickoff to the house from close to 90 yards out. Howard came in and nailed the PAT to make this a 26-20 game.

Gavin Malone got to Gillespie for a loss of six. Gillespie shook off the loss by going 48 yards to set up the Cavs with a first and goal from the four. The Redmen's defense would keep the Cavs off of the board, with Connor Moore getting Gillespifor a loss of six, and then Yaden Baily dropped Vaugn for a loss of five, with 8:21 left in the third.

After Cox ran for 19 yards, the Cavs defense came up big. First, Hezekiah Powell dropped Bardy Murrell for a loss of four, then Gillespie picked off the Cox pass, with 2:20 left in the third.

Both teams took turns making some good plays in the final frames as both teams also committed several penalties in the quarter. One of the big defensive plays came from Rock Hill when Aaron Workman dropped Gillespie for a loss of nine, with 3:25 left in the game. A bigger defensive play also came from Rock Hill, with Carson Doolin picking off a Phillips pass and taking it about 20 yards for the score. The PAT was wide right, keeping this a 32-20 game, with 2:57 left. Phillips would end a 2-play, 60-yard drive with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Vaughn, making this a 32-26 game, with 2:18 showing on the clock.

The Redmen's defense would make the last big play of the game, and it came on a McClellan 40-yard pick six. Howard drilled the PAT to make the final score 39-26, Redmen.
