Foxfire 38 West Union 00
My Saturday night game took me to Firefox High School for the first time to watch West Union vs. Firefox. The smallish but very into crowd was treated to a hard-hitting game that turned out to be very one-sided. Both teams gave it everything they had even when the outcome was known to all.
The Phoenix got a 29-yard run from Zayden Imani, a 6-0, 170-pound senior, to set up the game's first score, and that came on a Brayden O'Neill pass to Nazir Smith from 20 yards out. Koben Bowen, another senior, ran the two-point conversion to make this an 8-0 game, with a little over 11:00 left in the opening quarter.
Freshman quarterback Noah Cole would find Gabe Parker for 10 yards for the Dragons to get things started for the offense. A bad snap led to Cole getting hit by Caidyn Dunn, forcing a fumble that Koben Bowen recovered, with 9:35 left on the clock.
Bowen sprinted a 15-yard run to get the ball rolling for the Phoenix. The two-play, 18-yard drive ended with O'Neill cruising in for the 3-yard score. Nazir Mith made it 16-0 with his two-point conversion run, with 8:57 remaining in the quarter.
Foxfire had the ball again, and with 6:34 left in the quarter, Smith ran for a gain of twenty-four to set up a first and goal from the one. Imani would be tossed down by Kyler Grooms as the Dragons' defense continued to give it all they had. O'Neill would go for the 5-yard touchdown, making this a 22-0 game, with 5:17 still left in the opening quarter.
The Dragons were forced to punt on their next drive, with the result being a 37-yard punt return by Imani followed by a two-point conversion pass from O'Neill to Smith to make this a 30-point game, with 2:28 showing on the clock.
Grooms would be sacked for a loss of seven by Blaze Hook. Grooms would be knocked out of the game when Imani drove his shoulder into him on the hit of the game.
The rest of the game was played with the running clock. In the 2nd quarter, O'Neill picked off the Noah Cole pass. In the third quarter, Cole was picked off by Hook. The final touchdown of the game came on the Phoenix's only drive, with O'Neill finding Smith for a 52-yard touchdown. O'Neill hit Ashton Wells to complete the scoring, making the score 38-0.
The Dragons would get two completions from Cole to Drayden Holebrook for 20 yards and 7 yards, but the drive ended with a turnover on downs, and then the game was ended.
