Arcanum runs all over Dixie 50-13

Thursday night took me back to Arcanum to watch the Trojans battle the Dixie Greyhounds. Entering the game at 2-0 and a heavy favorite, the Trojans looked poised all during warmups. The Greyhounds, 0-2, dressing just 21 players, looked ready during warmups. The home crowd was large, as they seemed to fill up their entire side of the bleachers, including people setting in line chairs and standing in other areas. The visitors looked to have about 75 fans on their side.

The electricity started flowing right away for the Trojans when MJ Macy picked up the kickoff and returned it all the way to the Greyhounds' 6-yard line. Hudson Knaus easily scored on the drive's first play to make this a 6-0 game. Joey Marshall nailed the PAT to make this a 7-0 game, with just 19 seconds off of the clock.

Cole Swafford, who got little protection when he dropped back to pass, had to scramble and was dropped for a 2-yard loss by Knaus and Marcus Rayburn, with 9:07 showing on the clock. A punt soon followed as the Trojans' defense made easy work of the Greyhound offense.

The Trojans' offense needed just 5 plays to go 80 yards to take a 14-0 lead. Scoring was Knaus on a 64-yard run with 6:46 remaining in the opening quarter.

Swafford was able to pick up a first down when he ran four 6 yards when needing just five to move the chains, with 2:01 left on the clock. Before the clock hit zeros, Nathan Metcalf rambled for a nice 18-yard gain.

The drive ended when the Trojans stopped Swafford on a fourth and goal from the 3-yard line early into the 2nd quarter. After getting the ball back, the Trojans needed just 2 plays to score again. Macy raced for the score on a fine 47-yard run to make this a 21-0 game, with 5:17 left in the half.

With 2:39 left in the half, we had a 28-0 game after Macy scored from 39 yards out.

The Greyhounds were outmatched and outtalented in this one, but to the credit of the coaches and players, there was no quit, and their smallish crowd shouted words of encouragement all the way until the game was over. Swafford hooked up with Colt Himan for a 23-yard completion to help set up a 4-yard touchdown pass to Ayden Hipp to make this a 28-7 game, with six seconds left in the half.

The Trojans need two plays to light up the scoreboard again, with the score coming on a Macy to Raysean Miles 16-yard pass to give us the halftime score. 34-7 as the PAT was blocked.

Dixie struck first in the 2nd half, when Swafford found Noah Thompson for the 8-yard touchdown to make this a 34-13 game as the two-point conversion pass was incomplete.

A 42-yard run from Knaus set up a Robert Denniston 4-yard run to put the Trojans up 40-13, with 5:46 left in the quarter.

Swafford threw deep trying to make something happen, but the pass was easily picked off by Weston Schmidt with 5:46 left in the quarter. A 36-yard run from Macy set up the next Trojans score that came on a leaping catch by Miles from 21 yards out, making this a 46-13 game, with 1:45 left on the clock.

The final two big plays in this one came in the final frame, and both came from the Trojans. First, Louie Powers got an interception, and then it was a short touchdown run by Kenton Kenworth to make the final score 53-13.
