Boyle County escapes LCA 28-21
The third game of my weekend trip to Kentucky brought the matchup between powerhouse Boyle County and a gritty L.C.A. squad. According to most, this game was going to be very one-sided, and it started just that way, but L.C.A., like a boxer, grew tired of being punched in the face, picked itself off of the ground, and started throwing haymakers of their own, and by the time this game wrapped up, we had ourselves a highly contested game that left the large crowd scratching their heads and saying wow, what a game.
Conrad Hart made the first big play for the L.C.A. defense when he put super talented Seneca Driver down for a short loss after the catch was made. Bode Darland made the next big play for the L.C.A. defense when he got to Baylor Murphy for a short loss. At the 5:26 mark of the first quarter, Boyle County would get a nice pass play from Murphy to hard-working Bubby McPherson that placed the ball on the L.C.A. 3-yard line. Murphy was dropped for another short loss, this time by Aiden Lyons. The 16-play, 77-yard drive ended on a 1-yard run by Darryl Yancey. #53 Grant Klosterman was true on the PAT, making this a 7-0 game, with 3:53 showing on the clock.
Two big defensive plays, one from each team, came before the quarter ended. For the Rebels, Jax Crowe got to Nash Whelan for a loss of one. For the Eagles, Nash Whelan made a pick on a Murphy pass.
With 9:39 remaining in the half, Murphy found Kain Logan for a 53-yard gain. JiDyn Smith-Hisel used the work from his O-line to go up the heart of the Eagles' defense, gaining 12 yards. Murphy moved the chains with a completion to Seneca Driver.
Once the Eagles got the ball back, Nash Whelan hit Tyler King for 22 yards. That would be the highlight of the drive for the Eagles as the Rebels' defense clamped down hard to get their offense back on the field.
A 26-yard run by Kain Logan at the 3:37 mark helped set up a 7-yard touchdown run from Murphy, making this a 14-0 game. The drive went for 9 plays and 85 yards.
The Rebels' defense got a pick by Drive with 24.4 seconds left in the half. 4 plays and 29 yards later we had a 21-0 game when Murphy found Lucas Akers for the 15-yard touchdown.
Daven Hood started the Eagles' drive with a 25-yard run and finished it with a 10-yard touchdown run, followed by the PAT from Dean Hester, making this a 21-7 game, with 8:49 left in the third quarter.
JiDyn Smith-Hisel looked good, gaining 43 yards with 8:03 left in the quarter, but with 7:45 left and the Rebels looking to increase their lead, he coughed the ball up, resulting in a touchback.
Nash Whelan found Tyler King for 14 yards to get the offense flying. But the Rebels' defense stood tall after that, allowing very little and getting the ball back to their offense.
The final 5:37 of the quarter brought two good plays for the Eagles. First, Bode Darland got Nathaniel Schepman for a loss of six. Then Daven Hood made this a 21-14 game when he plowed in from a yard out.
With 10:30 left in the game, Nash Whelan picked up 16 yards, taking the ball all the way to the Boyle County 10-yard line. Facing a fourth and one, the Eagles would get a 1-yard touchdown run from Daven Hood, and just like this, we had a 21-21 game, with 8:03 left.
Boyle County started their drive with a little under 8:00 minutes showing on the fourth-quarter clock. 15 plays later, Darryl Yancey followed the offensive line into the end zone to give the home team a 28-21 lead, with 1:48 left.
The Eagles worked the ball all the way to the red zone but came up 1 yard short of a first down. The ball was over at the Rebels' 4-yard line, where the Rebels were able to run the clock out and escape with the win.
