OVAC ALL-STAR GAME WV 15 Ohio 14

The 79th Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Annual Rudy Mumley All-Star Game was another hard-fought battle between Ohio and West Virginia. Defense ruled the nest for most of the game as the two teams combined for just 394 yards of offense. Ohio held West Virginia to just 37 yards in the first half, while West Virginia held Ohio to just 93 yards in the second half.

Just three minutes into the game, Brody Cottrill (Linsly) used a high snap to Ohio quarterback Aiden Davis (Stubenville) to drop the Ohio quarterback for a 6-yard loss. At the 6:00 mark of the opening quarter, Ohio would get a stop on third and one when Michael Balgo (St. Clairsville) pulverized Klypsan Wallace (Cameron). With 3:14 left in the quarter, facing a third and one, Ohio would get the first down when Dino Burk (St. Clairsville) picked up 3 yards. Burk picked up 12 yards, taking the ball to the West Virginia 39-yard line with 1:47 showing on the clock. Davis used his feet to pick up 10 yards for Ohio with 1:24 left on the clock.

Ohio picked up a first down on a fourth-and-one call with Burk inching forward just enough to move the chains, with 9:34 left in the half. Burk would cough the ball up on the West Virginia 1-yard line, and making the recovery for the West Virginia All-Stars was Patrick Christ (Linsly), with 8:51 left in the half.

After getting the ball back, the Ohio All-Stars got a 14-yard run from Zion McGee (Indian Creek). Davis found Dre Saunders (Union Local) for a 6-yard touchdown. After Evan Lough (Barnesville) drilled the point after kick, Ohio had a 7-0 lead, with 5:43 left on the clock.

With 2:18 left on the clock, West Virginia opted to go for it on fourth and one, with Lucas McAllister (Weir) being dropped by Peyton Causby (Union Local) for a loss of two, forcing a turnover on downs.

Burk was thrown for a loss of two by Wesley Molish (Madonna) with 0:58 left in the half. Hayden Gaiser (John Marshall) got what had to be the easiest interaction in his life when Davis threw an ugly pass with 0:36 left in the half.

Two plays stuck out in the third quarter; the first was a sack on Davis by Molish and Coldin Burkhart (Wheeling Park), and then it was McAllister using his feet to pick up 6 yards on a fourth and five try.

West Virginia took the momentum into the fourth quarter after the big fourth-down pickup to keep their drive alive, and with 11:51 left in the game, McAllister used his feet to pick up 18 yards, taking the ball down to the Ohio 9-yard line. Facing a fourth and two from the Ohio two, McAllister powered his way in to bring West Virginia to within a point. Chase Hile locked things up at seven with his point after kick, with 9:58 left in this one.

Brady Schaffer (St. Clairsville) would hit Dre Saunders for a gain of thirteen, with 7:51 left in the game. Ohio had four quarterbacks on the roster, but only two played, with one of the two getting over 95% of the snaps. The same combo struck again for Ohio with 5:54 left for what would have been a big gain, but a flag on Ohio caused the gain to be just 13 yards instead of the 28 they would have had. Things would get no better for Ohio with 3:12 left when Alex Reese dropped what would have or should have been a touchdown.

The Ohio defense would get a stop on Aiden Brooks (Linsly) when D'Shawn Kirby (East Liverpool) threw the runner down for a third down, forcing a West Virginia punt.

Saunder picked up nearly 35 yards on the punt return, setting Ohio up at the West Virginia 27-yard line, with 1:12 left. Davis would find Chance Allen (Monroe Central) for the 20-yard touchdown to make this a 14-7 game, with seventeen seconds left.

While Ohio was busy celebrating what looked like a victory, West Virginia calmly took the field needing 84 yards for a touchdown. The Ohio defense took the field, but it looked like they felt the game was over when McAllister slung a pass to Damir Mowder (Weir). Mowder looked like Kenny (The Snake) Stabler as he slithered his way past an Ohio defense, who weakly tried to tackle him but failed to, with the result being an 84-yard touchdown. West Virginia did what any smart team would do in an all-star game, and that would be go for two and the win. McAllister threw a hard pass to Mowder, who made the game-winning catch to give West Virginia the 15-14 win.
