Post a small recap of last season with something like a big game you had, something about a certain game, something from a bus ride to or from the game, or something that sticks out from a practice.
We were a very young team. We had 3 (2 sr., 1 jr.) starting upperclassmen on offense last year but get most of our weapons back this year. We competed well for most games through the first half and were close at halftime but ran out of gas in the second half of games. We got a lot better as the season progressed; over half of our passing touchdowns came in our last 3 games—1 regular season game and 2 sectional games.
How long have you played football and baseball?
Football since I was seven.
Baseball since I was four.
Of the two sports, which one do you feel you are better at?
I am a football player first.
How did the baseball season go for you?
Really well
Led our team statistically with a
.430 batting average
44 stolen bases (5th in state, all classes)
46 hits (3rd in state, all classes)
Second with 38 runs scored
I was the leadoff hitter and was a utility player, playing every position except catcher. I was voted 1st team all-conference and 1st team all-area big school for the Lafayette area.
At what age did you start playing quarterback?
8 in flag football in West Lafayette, IN.
What was the highlight of the 2024 season?
As a team, we grew a lot and had a lot more success as the season progressed, even though we finished 5-6.
Personally, I broke 7 school passing records in my first year.
Single-season records for
passing attempts 364
Passing completions: 206
Passing yards: 2624
Single game record of
Passing completions: 26
Passing attempts: 44
Passing yards: 337
Career passing completions with 206
We won our first sectional game in years.
What will you miss the most from the 2024 class?
We lost 4 defensive and 2 offensive starters.
Our defensive leader, Leo Dellinger, a safety, graduated; he was a great player for us. Also, our outside LB, defensive rush end, and a cornerback.
We also lost two linemen offensively.
What is the best part of being in a pass-first offense?
We always have an opportunity to move the ball and score. Coach has put a lot of trust in me to run his offense. This year’s success as a team will be determined by our offensive success and growth. We have all our skilled guys back and a few new faces that I am excited about.
Would you share with the readers some of the camps you have attended, as well as some of the bigger things you are taking from the camps?
I have attended Valparaiso, Purdue, Lindenwood Mega Camp, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Miami OH Mega Camp, University of Indianapolis Mega Camp, Indiana State, Ferris State, Toledo, Tiffin, Miami OH Prospect, Saginaw Valley State, and Illinois State.
I have met a lot of great coaches and am building relationships with them. Being on campus and competing with other great QBs is something I love. There are a lot of talented players at these camps, and to have an opportunity to showcase my game and get better overall has been a big takeaway.
Do you think all teams should make the playoffs? Explain
I think the current class system in Indiana works. It gives teams the opportunity to overcome bad parts of their season and compete for championships, sectional or more.
What are your goals for the season?
We want to win 7 games and make it to our sectional title game.
I have 3 receivers, Mason Brummett, Ledger Shaffer, and Ethan Need, that have worked really hard.
That looks great in workouts, and I would like all three to make all-conference.
I have personal goals to throw for over 3000 yards and 35 touchdowns, but even more than the personal goals are the team goals and winning. Coach O’Shea is a hall of fame coach and has us ready to take the next step offensively. I am really excited.
What goals are you setting for the team?
7 wins and sectional title game appearance. I would like to think if we make it there, we have a good shot to win it.
What type of defense do you enjoy going up against the most? Explain
We see a lot of zones with different blitzes/pressures. Most of the teams we face have a 3-4 look. I wouldn’t say I have a favorite to face. I enjoy the challenge of seeing what they are trying to do with pressures and their coverages and finding the holes to attack. I love competing against a good defense and taking advantage of their weakness.
Who are your favorite and least favorite college teams?
I grew up rooting for Notre Dame because of my dad and my grandpa, who graduated from ND.
Least is Alabama.
What is your go-to snack?
I have just hired a nutrition coach, so that is a changing answer. Fruit and energy/protein bars. But I love steak and pizza.
Have you ever gone to an Indianapolis Indians game?
Yes, we sang the national anthem and watched a game there in my 8th grade year.
