Words From Samuel
Last season had lots of ups and downs, with many of our O-linemen sadly getting injured, and it was really special to see the next-man-up mentality that my team had. Originally in the summer of last season, I was supposed to play center, but unfortunately, after injuries to our left guard, I stepped in that position to help the team. My favorite part of the season was the regional championship against Decatur Central because it was what everyone describes as a dogfight. Even though we lost, it was awesome to see my guys go out and fight the way they did.
What will you miss the most from the 2025 class?
I’ll definitely miss all of the competitiveness that they had through the season. Practice was something special because we always competed like it was a game no matter what.
Who or what got you started playing football?
My mom got me into football and eventually convinced me to start playing. The biggest thing for me was I thought everyone was going to be looking at me then my mom described to me that I’m in my own helmet, so no one will be able to tell who I am, and I still hold that dear to my heart today.
What motivates you to keep playing the game?
What motivates me to keep playing the game is that football is the only sport left that can truly teach you about everything that you’re going to face in life. And in a shorter fashion, I just like how hard the game is. Nothing about football can be half effort, or you’re going to get hurt, and you can only blame yourself.
Rivalry games—are they still a rivalry if one team wins them most of the time?
I think rivalry games only count if one, they had a history behind the rivalry, and two, both teams have won in the past 8 years.
What makes you a good teammate?
I think what makes me a good teammate is my consistency. I always show up early to everything. And really, I’ve been taught that from senior classes in the past. Looking up to them and seeing how much work they put in was a great experience.
Who is the best player that you have faced in a game, along with the team he played for?
I would say Blake Smythe out of Franklin Community High School is the best player I’ve played against.
Who is the toughest teammate to square up against at practice?
The toughest guy to go up against in practice for me would have to be Trey Nishime; he’s a very talented and skilled player with quick feet and hands.
What do you feel is the strongest part of your game?
For me, the strongest part of my game would have to be the mental side of the game. I’ve always prided myself on knowing the plays and how to correct stuff based on the defense.
What have you been able to accomplish during the off-season to improve your game?
I’ve been able to improve my maxes by significant amounts during the offseason, which has really helped me with my power and explosiveness. And to add on to that, my agility has also gotten better with all of the agility work that I’ve been putting in.
What has been your biggest moment as a football player?
I would have to say my biggest moment was when I had to switch positions and learn a whole new position in less than a week to get ready for my first varsity game.
Should every team make the playoffs?
I think every team should make the playoffs because that’s the way I’ve grown up with it in Indiana, and it allows people with really tough schedules to shine.
Which game are you looking forward to the most this season?
I’m looking forward to the Harrison game the most because we took the loss against them last season in a super tight game, and I’ve been training to make sure that doesn’t happen again.
What scares you?
Nothing.
Outside of sports, what are you doing for fun?
I really like to build things out of wood, I’ve learned how to weld, and I really enjoy spending time with my friends and family.
Who is your favorite athlete?
My favorite athlete has to be Jason Kelce. His mental toughness and attitude that he plays with are something I’ve always tried to replicate.
