(Softball) Lakewood Lancers escape the Utica Redskins 6-5 in 8 innings
Utica (3-4) entered their game with undefeated Lakewood (11-1) off a 7-1 loss to Johnstown. The Lancers had just beaten Fairfield Union on Saturday 11-1 and were looking to stay perfect on the season.
The game might have looked like a mismatch to many, but in the ever-so-tough Licking County League, records are often deceiving as to how tough a game will be. The Lancers would get a big game offensively from Averie Adams, a junior, who had 4 hits and 2 RBI, including the game winner in the bottom of the eighth. Carly Williams would have 3 hits and 1 RBI in the win. Riley Williams also added 2 hits in the win. Anna Crist had a hit and 2 RBI. Brianna Hoisington also had 1 RBI.
For the Redskins, Emily Myers went 3-3 in the loss with 2 RBI. Cheyene Smith had 1 RBI in the loss. Kiersten Hull had 2 hits. As a team, the Redskins had 8 hits compared to 14 for the Lancers.
The Redskins swiped six bases in the game. Emily Myers and Avery Rine each had two. Ashlyn Carder of the Lancers committed the only error in the contest. Cheyene Smith went the distance for Utica. For the Lancers, Adams threw 2 innings, allowing 2 hits and 3 earned runs, with 3 bases on balls and 1 strikeout. Carder threw 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 earned runs, and 2 base on balls, with 6 strikeouts.
Utica will host Johnstown on Tuesday, and the Lancers will travel to winless Zanesville on Wednesday.
