(Girls)Waterford Wildcats win D-7 state title with a 48-46 win over Fort Loramie


 

Waterford has quietly become a powerhouse in small school girls basketball and this season added to their powerhouse reputation as they played for the Division VII state title against another powerhouse in small school basketball, Fort Loramie. Between the two schools, they had a 51-4 record. 3,247 total people were in U.D. Arena for this one, with all of them being treated to an awesome competitive game.

Waterford took control in the opening stanza, using 5 points from Kendall Sury and 4 points from Avery Wagner to lead 12-7 after one. The Redskins would get 3 points from Mylee Shatto. In the quarter, Waterford was able to get 5 turnovers, while they turned the ball over 4 times. The Wildcats also won the battle of the boards 6-5.

The Redskins cut an 8-point deficit down to two with some nice late play in the half. Victoria Mescher led the way with 6 points on 2 of 3 shooting and 2 of 2 shooting from the charity stripe. Avery Brandewie scored 4 points in the quarter by hitting all four of her free throws. The Wildcats countered with three players scoring three points apiece. (Ava Hurley, Avery Smithberger, and Avery Wagner) The Redskins hit all six of their free throws in the quarter while the Wildcats went 2 for 2. The Redskins out-rebounded the Wildcats 6-4.

The third quarter would see the Wildcats score 17 of the 30 points scored. The Wildcats would hit 6 of 11 from the field while the Redskins connected on 5 of 9. Avery Wagner would leave her mark on the game with 9 points in the quarter. She was 3 for 3 from the field and 2 for 2 from the charity stripe. To add icing on the cake, she made a three-pointer. Elsie Malec added 4 points. The Redskins would get 6 points from Victoria Mescher. Combined, the teams hit 11-20 shots from the field, with the Wildcats hitting 6 of 11. Each team had 5 rebounds, with Avery Brandewie leading the way for the Redskins with three.

Kendall Sury had six of 15 points in the final frame. Brynnlee Pottmeyer only had two points in the game, but both were big and came from the free throw line late in the game. Victoria Mescher led the Redskins with 19 points, having seven in the final frame. Mylee Shatto had 9 points, all coming from three-point land. Also for the Redskins, Avery Brandewie had 8 points.

For the game, the Redskins hit 11 of 14 from the charity stripe, while the Wildcats went 9 of 13. The Redskins did win the battle of the boards 24 to 21. The Wildcats hit 47.1% of their shots while the Redskins connected on 40.5% of theirs. The Redskins outscored the Wildcats in the paint 20-18. The 48-46 final score, along with the stats, showed how close this game was.
