(Girls)Purcell Marian takes D-3 State Title with a 72-44 win over Avon Lake
Purcell Marian entered the state championship game looking to earn their 23rd game of the season, while Avon Lake was seeking win number 24. The Cavaliers were the big favorite to earn another state title, and with four seniors in the starting lineup, one knew they would have little or no nerves about playing once again in Dayton. For Avon Lake, they had three seniors in their lineup, with a junior and a sophomore.
Things started out very sloppy early, but once things settled down, the Cavaliers jumped out to a 23-8 lead and left no doubt as to how the rest of this one was going to go. Using a pressing defense that made life a nightmare for Avon Lake, the Cavaliers would force 11 turnovers in the half, helping them lead 45-21 at the half.
The third quarter was much of the same, with the Cavs winning the quarter 18-7 and stretching their lead to 63-28. Avon Lake would take the final frame 16-9, making the final score 72-44.
Leading the way for the winners with 27 points, 10 boards, and 7 assists was Dee Alexander. She hit 11-13 shots and 5-6 free throws. Trinity Small checked in with Kyaira Miller and Samaya Wilkins; each had 11 points. For Avon Lake, Olivia Miller led the way with 12 points, and Izzie Polinko had 11 points and 6 boards.
For the game, the Cavs hit 54.9% from the field, with Avon Lake hitting 42.1. The Cavs won the battle of the boards 28-20. The Cavs had 17 assists compared to 9 for Avon Lake. Olivia Tobin led Avon Lake with 4 assists, and she was 3-4 from the field, finishing with 7 points.
