(Girls) Perfection Winton Woods caps off perfect season with a state title beating Anthony Wayne 70-55

Winton Woods out of Cincinnati came into the state championship weekend as the only undefeated team in the state (26-0). The beat Division One Pickerington Central, who plays for a state title later today, and they beat the likes of Milford twice (18-5), Magnificat (20-6), also a D-1 school like Pickerington Central, and let's not forget the win over Olentangy (22-4). So, there was nothing that an excellent Anthony Wayne (22-4) team was going to throw at them that they were not prepared for. Not to say that this was not going to be a very tough game that the winner was going to earn on the floor.

The first quarter was very competitive with Winton Woods leading 21-19 with both teams showing the crowd of 3,334 why they were there. For the Warriors in the quarter, offensively they were a one-lady show with Strawberry Blankumsee scoring 13 points largely by hitting 6-6 free throws to go with hitting 3-5 from the floor, including a three-pointer. For the generals, they would get 9 points from Leah Pike and 8 points from Elise Bender. The duo would go 7-12 from the field, including three of four from beyond the three-point line.

In the second quarter, the Warriors would add to their lead by outscoring the Generals. 16-14. This time Daniah Trammell led the way with 6 points. For Anthony Wayne, Elise Bender had 8 points and Brooke Bender had 6. For the half, the Warriors connected on a red-hot 54.2% of their shots compared to 48% for the Generals. The Warriors won the battle of the board 9-6.

In the third quarter, the Warriors speed and defense allowed them to slightly pull away, outscoring the Generals 13-7. The Warriors forced six turnovers in the quarter while they did not have any. Blankumsee would have six points in the quarter. For a freshman, she played like a senior on a mission to not only lead her team to a win but to get more attention from any college coach who was watching the game. Leading Anthony Wayne in the quarter was Brooke Bender with 4 points. Neither team shot the rock well in the quarter; the Warriors connected on 5-13 shots, while the Generals hit 3-12.

In the final frame, the Warriors were able to pull away for the 70-55 win. In the quarter, Blankumsee had 9 points to end her night with 28 points on 13-15 shooting. She added 3 steals and 3 rebounds to her slate. Elise Bender led the Generals in the final stanza with 6 points. On the night, she would have 26 points on 11-21 shooting from the floor. She also pulled down a game-high 13 boards.

The Generals got a nice game from Daniah Trammell with 17 points and 8 boards. Whitley Davis added 11 points, and Niyala Harmon chipped in with 10 points. For the Generals, Leah Pike had 14 points and 3 boards. Brooke Bender had a double-double with 11 boards and 10 points.

For the game, the winners hit 50% from the floor and held the Generals to 39%. Winton Woods forced 19 turnovers while having just 7. Anthony Wayne won the battle of the boards 34-22, including 19-7 offensive rebounds. The Generals hit 7 threes while the Warriors hit three. A big difference in this one was that the Warriors outscored the Generals 36-22 in the paint.
