Maysville Panthers are your Division Four State Champions with a 74-67 win over Cleveland Glenville


 

7,148 people were at U.D. Arena to watch Maysville and Glenville battle for the Division Four state basketball title. Maysville entered with a 26-3 record while Glenville out of Cleveland came in 19-8.

This one started out with Glenville leading 5-0 behind a three-pointer from Frehman. Garry Pritchett Jr. and a bucket from Xavier Vickerstaff. Mayville responded with eight straight points. Gator Nichols nailed three-pointers, followed by a layup from Jordyn Watson. The quarter ended with holding a 17-13 lead. Leading the Tarblooders with 5 points on 2-3 shooting was Theo Castro. For the Panthers, Nichols too had 5 points.

In the second quarter, the two teams traded buckets to get things started. Glenville struck first with Amir Lessears scoring on a layup, and for the Panthers, Nichols hit a three. Glenville would lead by seven at one point in the quarter before the Panthers shaved two points off of the lead to trail 37-32 at the half. Leading Glenville in the quarter with 8 points was Vickerstaff, and for the Panthers, Nichols had 10 points.

Jordyn Watson started an 8-0 Panthers run with two free throws. Glenville stopped the run with Casto hitting two free throws. The final three points in the quarter came from a three-pointer from Vickerstaff to give Glenville a 56-54 lead entering the final frame. Leading the Tarblooders in the quarter with 4 pieces were Castro and Pritchett. Nichols again led the Panthers with ten points.

Maysville would end the game on a 16-2 run to earn their title. In the quarter, Nichols went off for 10 points, ending his game with 36 points. He connected on 11 of 21 shots from the floor, including 4 of 7 from beyond the arc, and he hit 10 of 12 free throws. Watson added 19 points on 6-10 shooting from the field. He hit 6-10 from the field, 2-3 from beyond the arc, and 5-6 from the charity stripe.

For Glenville, Vickerstaff led the way with 21 points. He hit 8-17 from the floor, including 5-9 from three-point land. He did go 0-2 from the charity stripe. Castro checked in with 18 points. He would go 6-11 from the field, 2-3 from three-point land, and make 4-6 free throws.

For the game, the Panthers hit 51.1% from the floor compared to 47.2% for Glenville. Maysville hit 17-22 free throws, while Glenville hit just 6-13. Glenville dominated the boards, holding a 32-15 edge. Glenville had 10 turnovers to just 5 for the Panthers.
