(Girls)Columbus Grove owns Rootstown to capture Division VI State Title 65-46

 


 

Played with 3,109 people in U.D. Arena. Columbus Grove looked right at home as they raced out to a 22-6 first-quarter lead, never looking back as they posted a 19-point win over a very good Rootstown squad. Kendal Palte started hot for the Bulldogs, going 4-5 from the field and 2-2 from the charity stripe for 10 points in the quarter. Allison Thompson chipped in with 5 points. For Rootstown, they had three players score 2 points each. Sophi Smith hit her only shot in the quarter. There were 12 turnovers in the quarter, with the Rovers committing seven.

Rootstown looked very good in quarter number two, hitting 7 free throws and 2 three-point baskets en route to outscoring the Bulldogs 13-11. Leading the way in the quarter for the Rovers was Elliot Smallfield with 7 points, including 4-4 from the charity stripe. Lauryn Auchmuty led the Bulldogs in the quarter with 5 points. She made 3 free throws and hit one shot from the field. Both teams had six rebounds, and each team had seven turnovers.

The Bulldogs had things their way in the third quarter, outscoring the Rovers by five. Nicole Nesby took this time to leave her mark on the game, as she scored 7 points. She made both of her shots from the field and all three of her free throws. Freshman Aubrey Schroeder got involved, scoring 4 points, including two free throws and a two-point bucket. Also getting 4 points in the quarter was Kendal Palte. For the Rovers, Addy Germann, Elliot Smallfield, and Kelsey Bittecuffer each had 3 points. An 11-5 edge on the boards for the Bulldogs bit hard in the quarter. Each team had five turnovers in the frame.

Lauryn Auchmuty and Aubrey Schroeder each had 6 points in the final frame for the Bulldogs. The senior Auchmuty and the freshman Schroeder seemed to sense that this was their quarter as they each took turns having their time in the spotlight. Nicole Nesby made her only shot in the quarter to score 2 points. For Rootstown, Addy Germann had 6 points to lead the way with help coming from Kelsey Bittecuffer (5 points), Colbie Curall (2 points), and rounding out the scoring for the Rovers in the quarter with 1 point was Addison Pownall.

Lauryn Auchmuty, with 17 points, led the Bulldogs. She would hit 9-10 from the free throw line to overcome going just 3-10 from the field. She also added 6 assists and 6 boards. Kendal Palte and Aubrey Schroeder each totaled 14 points.

Kelsey Bittecuffer led the Rovers with 12 points. Her top help as far as scoring goes was by Elliot Smallfield with 10 points. Nadia Lough had 6 boards and 6 assists to lead the team, and she added 4 points.

Columbus Grove led by 26 points at one point in the game, and they had a 36-8 edge in points in the paint. They also scored 25 points off of turnovers compared to 11 by the Rovers. 12-1 was the difference in 2nd chance points, with the Bulldogs winning that battle too.
