Big 2nd half leads Patriot Prep Academy over Newark Catholic 58-45

Last night at Mt. Vernon Nazarene University, the #1 seeded Patriot Prep Academy Eagles (17-6) battled the #9 seed Newark Catholic Green Wave (7-17). According to the game preview, the Eagles had eight seniors on their roster, while Newark Catholic had just two. The Eagles also had a nice size advantage, and they were the much quicker of the two teams. The crowd on the Green Wave side was loud and vocal, including the student section off to the side under the basket on the top level. The Prep crowd was smallish and loud and, during the opening half, very upset with the refs. Two fans standing directly behind me went as far as to say the referees were cheating. When things started going well for the Eagles, their fans seldom complained.

For the game, in the first half, Newark Catholic was able to control all aspects. They used a slow-me-down type of offense with crisp, clean passes that allowed easy and open shots, and they boxed out well to help take away the Eagles height advantage. Senior Griff Urdarovski, the Green Wave's leading scorer, had a sweet half. He would go; he hit three big three-point buckets and connected on all seven of his free throws. He finished with 18 points in the half. Newark Catholic took a 32-24 lead into the locker room.

The Eagles would look like a new team in the second half. They would outscore the Green Wave 34-13, holding Urdarovski to zero points. Antonio Rogers would have 13 of his 17 points in the half to lead the Eagles. But the Eagles defense was the biggest difference in the half. They easily got their hands on the long Newark Catholic passes, leading to some easy buckets. 6-5 senior Cameron Thomas would get what seemed like every rebound in the half, allowing for many extra chances for the Eagles. He would cap off his night with just seven points. DeShawn Crawford, another senior for the Eagles, hit some nice shots from the outside, scoring 14 points on the night. Benjamin Williams, a senior, scored 10 points for the winners. Dylan Daube scored 9 of the 13 points for the Green Wave in the half.
