(Basketball)Johnstown Johnnies flush the Northridge Vikings 58-38
* Using records and rosters from Hudl, as it is almost impossible to get either from the schools.*
Tonight I made the drive to Northridge High School in Johnstown, Ohio, to catch the rivalry game between the home team, the Northridge Vikings, and the visiting Johnstown Johnnies.
The Vikings only dress eight players, so right away my thoughts were that fatigue and fouls could become a big problem for the Vikings. Heading into this one, the Vikings came in with a 4-7 record, while Johnstown was 6-4.
The Vikings took a 2-0 lead on the only points that Carson Beaver would score all night. Neither team could get much going early, with the Johnnies leading 10-8 after one. Early on it was easy to see that the Vikings wanted or had to slow things down with each possession they had; it was pass, pass, pass, then pass some more before shooting the ball. The Johnnies seem to shoot as soon as any player has a shot.
The second quarter would be more of the same as each team followed suit of what they were doing in the opening quarter. Just when it looked like the Johnnies were going to take a seven-point lead into the locker room, Dylan Chambers banked a three-pointer in to make the score 22-18.
The third quarter was all Johnstown as they outscored the Vikings 19-4 to lead 41-22. I think, and this is just a dumb fan's guess, fatigue set in along with some fouls going against the Vikings. It also did not help that at times, again this is a dumb fan's guess, the Vikings players were afraid to shoot the ball.
The Johnnies outscored the Vikings 17-16 in the final frame. The Johnnies would empty their bench with Ace Lowery scoring five points to lead the young players. At times you could hear some of the Viking fans yelling, Shoot the ball! over and over.
The Johnnies had seven players score, with John Eckenrode leading the way with 13 points, including two threes. Will Taylor had 12, with all of his points coming on two-pointers and free throws.
For the Vikings, Collin Mallernee had 11 points and was the only player in double figures. Scoring 9 apiece was hard work. Jake Davis and Chambers. The gym was packed, and the fans were pretty loud at times, as was the Vikings prep band.
