(Basketball) Watkins used big fourth quarter to beat Central Crossing 40-35
*Using the Watkins roster from Hudl and the Central Crossing roster was given to me by a coach from Grove City.*
Tonight I made my first drive to Central Crossing High School in Grove City to watch the Central Crossing Comets host Watkins Memorial in a non-conference basketball game. Coming in, the Comets were (2-5), while the Warriors set was (3-4). In watching the two teams warm up, I felt this was going to be a close game.
The contest was very close throughout the game. Neither team could get any flow going as there was pressure defense, turnovers galore, and a lot of shots that found a way to not go in.
The Comets held the lead after one at 11-6. In the quarter, defense ruled as neither team could get shots to drop for the most part. The Comets defense looked locked in early, and they were quick to help when a Warriors player went anywhere near the rim.
The second quarter would see the Warriors look much better with their offense, whereas the Comets just held steady, relying on their quick hands, deflected passes, and creating havoc on defense. When the half ended, the Comets led 21-15.
The two teams combined for just 14 points, with Watkins tallying 9 to cut the lead to 26-24, but more importantly for them was that they seem to have taken control of the game or at least had Uncle Mo. on their side as the teams got set for the final stanza.
The Warriors would take the game by outscoring the Comets 16-9. A large part of that was from the play of Donevan Sheppard, who scored 16 points total, had a big block in the fourth quarter, and nailed two free throws to ice the game. He was the only player to score double figures. His biggest help on offense came from Hunter Wagner, who scored six.
The Comets top scorer was Andreas Gordon with 9 points. Nathaniel Thompson hit a late three as he totaled 8 points.
