State Title Game: Brownsburg 22 Westfield 17
After each team had one drive in their pocket, the defense was winning the battle over the offense. But on the third drive, things started to click for Westfield, starting with an inniocent 3-yard run by Decon King. Then a 6-yard pass from Carsen Melvin to Nick Ferro slowly put Uncle Mo. on the Shamrocks side. A 21-yard run by Parker Knott kept things headed in the right direction. The drive would climax with a 5-yard run by King, but not before some excitement as King fumbled the ball but recovered it then scored. Fero was true on the PAT, making this a 7-0 game with 30 seconds left in the quarter. The drive total was 18 plays, picking up 79 yards.
The Samrocks would get their first drive in the 2nd quarter going with four straight positive plays, with the biggest being a 9-yard pass from Melvin to Brokc Parker. The drive would end on a nice 45-yard field goal by Owen Wright. The snap by Quinn Hapton was spot on, making the hold and kick as easy as any kicker could have asked for. This was a 10-0 game with 6:24 left in the half. The drive went for 10 plays, covering 38 yards.
The Bulldogs offense started to get things going on their next drive with an Oscar Frye to Braden Sharpe for a 13-yard gain. Sharpe led the team in receptions this season. The drive ended in a flash when the talented Kovon Sumpter-Bey hauled in a short Frye pass and then outran the defense for a 71-yard touchdown. Oscar Grant snapped the ball on target to Drew Bostic, and Will Orlando nailed the PAT to make this a 10-7 game with 4:17 left in the half. The drive lasted for 5 plays, totaling 77 yards.
The Bulldogs would start the 2nd half with the ball looking to take the lead or at the very least lock things up. On third and 10, Frye found Avin Robinson for a 65-yard gain, helping to set up a 25-yard field goal from Orlando to lock things up at 10. The drive totaled 72 yards on 7 plays. Orlando looked like a kicker my Buckeyes desperately can use.
Brownsburg would start their next drive with 2:27 left in the quarter. After the last points were scored up to this point, the offenses had combined for just 26 yards. Josua Stephens got the drive going with a pick up of 7 yards. He was brought down by Drew Law. Bey picked up 6 yards on two runs. A pass interference call on the Rocks gave the Bulldogs another 15. Bey ended the quarter with two more runs, picking up 22 yards. The drive continued in the final frame and ended on a Stephens to Sharpe 20-yard touchdown pass, ending the 12-play, 80-yard drive, putting the Bulldogs up 16-10 with 9:40 remaining.
Special teams are so often overlooked during games, but the biggest momentum shift in the game was brought on when Jemere Pendleton blocked a Parker Knott put; he then scooped it up and scored to make this a 22-10 game with 8:44 showing on the clock.
Westfield would grit their teeth and show they were not done by going 75 yards in 1:36 to make this a 22-17 game. Setting the score up with four straight completions by Melvin. Two of the passes were to Beau Braun and one each to Decon King and Knott. The score came on a 9-yard king run, making this a 22-17 game with 7:03 remaining.
Brownsburg would not score on their next drive, but they held the ball for 12 plays, gaining 50 yards and, more importantly, taking over 5:00 off of the clock.
The Shamrocks last drive would keep the big crowd on the edge of their seats. There would be a 16-yard completion to Knott, a sack by Mason Keifer. Then the biggest play of the drive came when a Melvin pass was picked off by junior Drew Bostic, securing the state title for the Bulldogs.
