Martinsburg wins state title 24-17 over Spring Mills

Charleston, West Virginia Koi Fagen had a roller coaster type of a game; he had fumbles and threw a pick but never wavered in his confidence to lead his Bulldogs to the promised land. When all was said and done, he overcame the bad and the ugly and finished the good with a nice 80-yard run for a score, the clinching points in one of the most competitive games I covered all season.

For the game, Fagen would connect on just 4-14 passes for 14 yards, with a pick and a touchdown. He was a beast on the ground, rushing for 289 yards and 2 touchdowns on 21 carries.

Boston Todd had just 2 catches, but one was for a touchdown. Kyree Bunny had the other 2 catches for the victorious Bulldogs.

Max Anderson had a tough game throwing the ball for Spring Mills. He would throw 2 interceptions on 15-27 passes, good for 156 yards. He was a dog running the ball, leading the Cardinals with 151 yards and 2 touchdowns on 24 carries.

6-6, 197 pounds Xavier Anderson, who looked to be a nightmare match-up for the Bulldogs, had 6 catches on 7 targets, good for 46 yards. The junior could have a big, big senior season in 2025 if he continues to have balls thrown his way. If the young gun can add some meat to his bones, every defense he faces will have to be aware. Keyon Mills grabbed 5 balls for 81 yards. He had 10 targets on the night.

For the game, the Bulldogs had 414 total yards, with 400 coming on the ground. The Cardinals had 338 yards, with 182 coming on the ground.

Leading the Bulldogs defense was Zavier Pollard with 9 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 3.5 tackles for a loss. The 6-1,265-pound senior went out with a bang and a state title.

Jordan Kovacs had 5 tackles and 1/2 of a sack. The junior showed he will be a player the state of West Virginia should take notice of in 2025.

Ty Rickets, a sophomore, was big with 2 interceptions and 5 tackles.

For Spring Mills, Anderson had a blocked punt to go with his 2 tackles. He also blocked a pass and then picked it off. Rylan Swartz had 6 tackles to lead the Cardinals in that stat. Keyon Mills, Tyree Ramey, and Travis Correia each recovered a fumble.

Loakkhae Uth-Smith was 1-2 on field goals for Spring Mills, while Samuel Collins was 1-1 for the Bulldogs.

There were just 750 fans at this game. With the long drive, both teams traveling over 3 hours, and the late start, most fans stayed home to watch the game on TV. The two teams battled earlier in the season, with the Bulldogs posting the win with over 8,000 fans at the game.
