Westland 48 Delaware 28

Galloway, Ohio On Friday I made the short drive to Galloway, Ohio, to catch the Westland Cougars game against Delaware Hayes. This would be my first time seeing Delaware and the second time I had taken in a game at Westland.

Westland got on board first with a simple screen play from Levi Estep to Jordan Matthews, who broke a tackle cut across the field, avoiding all defenders for the 38-yard score. After Donovan Moore nailed the PAT, we had a 7-0 game, with 9:39 left on the clock.

The Pacers responded quickly when Caleb Row found a wide-opened Caleb Christian for an 84-yard score. Chaz Sakala locked the game up at seven with his PAT, with 8:41 left in the opening quarter.

Westland would bring their high-octane offense back on the field, and a 21-yard by Kentrell Rinehart set up a 10-yard Estep run, making this a 14-7 game. A sweet block from Germere Sanchez aided in the score. The drive totaled 80 yards, lasting for 6 plays.

The Cougars would score again with 2:42 left on the clock. Estep was under crazy pressure when he threw a short pass to Aiden Rocky Jones, who galloped 52 yards for the score to make this a 21-7 game.

A Jordan Matthews 15-yard run helped set up the next Cougar score, which came on a 4-yard run by Rinehart to make this a 28-7 game. The drive totaled 65 yards, lasting 8 plays.

There would be no more scoring during the last 5:46 of the half, but that did not keep from some nice work from both teams. For Wesland, a 32-yard pass to Matthews got the home crowd excited. There was a nice 9-yard catch and move by Snachez that brought a first down with it. For Delaware, a sack by Gibson Dunham helped put a grumpy Delware crowd in a better mood, and then the Delaware defense got a nice play from Connor Murphy, who tackled Jones for a loss of three to force a turnover on downs.

Westland pulled off a fake punt on fourth and two when Matthews eeked out a 3-yard gain to move the chains. The drive ended a short time later, but the Westland defense would get a 30-yard pick-six from Landon Mcgoon to make this a 35-7 game with 5:10 left in the third.

Delaware would get a 14-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Rowe to Garrett Brown, making this a 35-14 game. The drive lasted for 10 plays, going for 74 yards.

Westland would light up the scoreboard with 0:48 left in the quarter when Matthews scored on an 80-yard run, where he just blew past the Pacers defense. The PAT was blocked by Wyatt Collins to keep this a 41-14 game.

Delware would go on an 11-play 77-yard drive with Rowe hitting Jack Welcome for 19 yards to set up a 19-yard touchdown pass to Favour Akih to close the gap to 41-21 with 10:16 left in the game.

Jayrece Dixon found Jordan Mathews for 30 yards, and then Rinehart plowed in from a yard out to make this a 48-20 game with 5:58 left.

Row would find Garrett Brown for a 30-yard touchdown pass with 3:12 left to give us the final score of 48-28.
